[新聞]磁單極子受證實,Dirac踢Maxwell下台

數十年來,科學家一直在尋找磁單極子:一種不同于傳統磁體的粒子,只具有北極或南極
的單一磁極。
在本周出版的《科學》雜誌上,兩個凝聚材料物理學家團隊分別獨立的宣佈探測到了磁單
極子
而預印本網站arXiv.org上的兩篇未發佈論文,則提供了更多證據。
英國物理學家Paul Dirac在1931年利用數學公式首次預言了磁單極子的存在
當時他認為既然帶有基本電荷的電子在宇宙中存在,那麼理應帶有基本“磁荷”的粒子存
在。
美國物理學家Nathan Seiberg和威滕(Edward Witten)於1994年首次證明磁單極子存在
理論上的可能性。
但在先前進行的研究中,科學家主要通過間接測量的方式尋找磁單極子,但在本周出版的
《科學》雜誌上,
研究人員首次直接通過實驗記錄到磁單極子對自旋冰(spin ice)晶體的作用。
法國Laue-Langevin研究院Tom Fennell領導的團隊和Helmholtz Centre Berlin for Mate
rials and Energy的Jonathan Morri領導的團隊都從自旋冰晶體觀察到了類似磁單極子的
粒子,
在自旋冰晶體中磁性離子的排列與冰中氫離子的排列相近。磁性離子位於四面棱體的各個
頂點上,
在接近絕對零度的溫度下,它們會以一個簡單的法則組織起來:每個四面體上,兩個離子
向內朝著中心指向北極,另外兩個向外。為了觀察磁單極子,研究人員利用中子去測量自
旋冰晶體內原子的散射模式。結果發現,散射的變化與假設磁單極子存在的電腦模型預測
的一致。arXiv.org上的一篇預印本稱每個磁單極子的磁荷為4.6x10-13焦耳/特斯拉米。
