Well 'home use' for some folks is trading equities, managing
property and bank accounts, often stuff more dear than the
employer's data, and with no time or helpful staff to do
the backups the office might get.
RAID1 - initially on 10 MB drives - has saved my
butt countless times.

MegaRaid and AcceleRAID are primarily OEM'ed, often
'remaindered' as brand-new but obsolete (and by no
means useless!) in major-vendor brown boxes for
very attractive prices - around US$ 70-100 for a
170-LP U160 single-channel RAID.
Two to four drives won't strain that at all.
It theoretically handles 256 devices using LUN x ID.
Very different animal from a single-channel SATA ;-)
