呃，因為時間的關係，我還是一樣，以講評為主。（想了一下要回 chingfen 的文章還是你的，不過因為你是原 po，就回這篇吧！） ※ 引述《JackXD (鴿子鳥)》之銘言： : I often talk about beauty, in my work as a marketer and an advisor to clients. : Why does beauty--that of an extraordinary sunset, for example--affect us so : deeply? : 身為一位商人以及客戶諮詢師，我常常談到美麗的事物。為什麼美麗的事物，像是讓 : 人醉心的日落，會影響我們這麼深? 我覺得這裡指的 marketer 是從「行銷」的角度，不過這不是我精專的領域，所以有錯就麻煩更了解的人指正了。還有，我覺得這裡指的 beauty，像 chingfen 一樣直接譯為「美」較恰當。一方面來說文章裡就不會一直出現「美麗的事物」五個字，另一方面來說這裡指的 beauty 不見得是 beautiful things, but is actually referring to the transcendental _quality_ of beauty (that may or may not be part of something). 像蔣勳出的那些書一樣（美的曙光、美的覺醒）。 : Beauty inspires us, by reminding us that the extraordinary is possible.Beauty : is uncommon enough that it puts us in awe. It brings us face-to-face, as F. : Scott Fitzgerald put it so well, with something "commensurate with our : capacity for wonder." : 美麗的事物會激發我們，讓我們知道超乎非凡是可能的。也因為美麗的事物太不平凡， : 所以我們對於美，總是處於敬畏之中。費滋傑羅詮釋得很好，「美景使我們看見自己心 : 中所擁有的不可思議。」 Awe 用「敬畏」還蠻有距離感的 XD When beauty puts someone in awe, it feels more as if the observer is dumbfounded. 例如說前面的女人掉了東西，我拍一拍她的肩膀告訴她，沒想到轉過身來她竟然是林志玲！在我的解讀裡，這種被嚇傻的心情就是原文所指的。 Fitzgerald 的這句話很棒，但你稍微有點誤解了？這裡的 commensurate 是一種比較詞，就是「ａ與ｂ對等」。所以看到這句要去找ａ跟ｂ分別是什麼。美是其中之一，那與美對等的就是 "our capacity for wonder"。 Fitzgerald 想說的是「人對於不可思議的東西所能感受到的讚嘆是無邊無際的」。這種讚嘆的感情有多麼偉大呢？跟無上的「美」足以對等的。要怎麼譯才漂亮，我就暫時不想了 XD 抱歉！ : Beauty assures us that life offers it, and that we can find more if we seek : more.It affirms that while life is far from perfect, it offers many nearly- : perfect things. : 儘管生活中有許多不完美，美麗的事物之所以存在，就是像我們保證，只要我們願意尋找 : ，生活本身仍然給予我們很多的美物，許多近乎完美的事物。第一小段很煩。有點像 circular argument.因為美存在，所以我們知道它存在。感覺這個還蠻棘手的 XD 你理解應該無誤，但寫出來句型不同，導致譯文與原文有微妙的差距... 我會這樣翻：「美」，讓我們能確信生命中它是存在的。而我們越去找尋它，能找到的美就更多。美的存在，使我們了解到雖然人生絕非完美，但生命卻賦與我們許多近乎完美的事物。 : When the beauty is a human creation, it reminds us of what we can accomplish. : It raises our standards, and our hopes, and speaks well of us. : When we own something beautiful, it acts as a mirror that reflects on us; we : feel that it is a part of us, and we are part of it. : 儘管「美」是人類創造出來的，它讓我們了解我們所能做到的。它提高了我們的標準，我 : 們的希望，也稱讚我們。當我們擁有一件漂亮的東西，這樣東西就像鏡子一樣反映我們的 : 一舉一動。我們感覺到它是我們的一部分，同時，我們也是它的一部分。這裡你少譯了「When」。要有 if 的感覺啊！若觀察到的「美」，是由凡人所創作出來的，我們便想起人類是能達成偉大的事。它提升了我們對自己的期望，並讚許同為凡人的自己。後半句還ｏｋ。 : And could it be that an appreciation of beauty is among the few things that : distinguish us from all other animals? Do apes or owls ever stop in the : presence of something beautiful, and simply contemplate it? : Beauty has such force that it compelled Kahlil Gibran to insist that we live : only to discover it. "All else," he continued, "is a form of waiting." : 難道，審美觀就是人類與其他動物不同的少數之一的特點嗎？猩猩或是貓頭鷹看到美麗的 : 東西，都不曾停下來，去想想那是什麼嗎？我會建議你把「難道」換成「而或許」。嗯.... 不太會解釋為什麼，但感覺上這樣譯會比較精準。第二句也是建議你把「都不曾」，改成「會停下來去想想那是什麼嗎」。我猜你是因為有 "ever" 這個字，所以才會譯成「都不曾」，不過譯成這樣，讀起來有種 accusatory 的語氣，好像說「那些動物才不會這樣呢」。而實際上原文比較像是「我猜人跟動物不同就是人會欣賞『美』。我不太確定，但動物會嗎？」後面你漏掉一整句喔　＝　＝ chingfen 譯得還不錯（用詞上我會建議作一些小調整，但理解是完全正確的）你可以去參考看看。 : These thoughts come to me when I think of those discussions with clients : about making something better. What about making it beautiful? : Might we gain anything from that? I ask. : Need I have asked? : 當我和幾個客戶在討論如何使產品更好時，這些想法突然出現在我腦海。要是我們讓一個 : 產品變得好看呢？ : 我們會從中得到什麼嗎？　我問 : 或是，我還需要問嗎？不太確定你有沒有注意到，因為譯文這麼寫，詮釋起來有些模糊的地方... （但 chingfen 那篇我確定沒有打到要害）關鍵點在 "making something better" vs "making it beautiful"。回到第一段，作者是以 marketing 還有 client advisor 的角度在看這些產品。要讓產品更有價值，就是這裡指的 "making [it] better"。 If we read between the lines, we may infer that: the author is rather helpless when he is doing his job, in that his clients may often want to improve physical specifications of products, and in turn neglect the value of making products beautiful. "Need I have asked" 則是在感嘆說「追求美應該是自然的、本能的、預設該作的」。大概是這種感覺。大部份用講評，而沒有直接譯出來給你參考，一方面是希望能鼓勵你再想想，自己找出最適合的譯法，另一方面也是因為我能力有限，或許我能想得出來，但要花太多時間了 XD -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 220.133.135.141
