: 1. inventor of the popular Grenaditte and New Voice flutes and piccolos,
: "he is making a career defying norms and stretching comfort levels."
making a career: 將 xxx 當作人生事業 (eg. making a career out of looking
great in front of cameras)
: 2. Geoffrey points out that flutists must "stretch mentally" to apprecite their
: unique
: qualities. "While it seems flutists like to purchase the latest bells and
: whiltles for their
: new flutes, stretching newness too far tends to turn flutists into
: traditionalists."
Bells and whistles

的時候,我想我們都會馬上想 "mentally, as opposed to what?"
I don't think there can be a right or wrong answer (not unless we have access
to the original article), but I definitely see your way of interpreting it.
Especially since that's how I approached this sentence at first.

"Comfort zone"
以我個人的經驗來說,comfort zone, defying norms, challenging the system 等等
With better tools, we should strive to do better work. It almost feels like
we no longer have an excuse to do a poor job and get away with it nowadays XD
