不是疑問句，是帶有條件 condition 的敘述句。
原型 if anyone were to... 可以倒裝成 were anyone to...。倒裝的形式更見於書面
語、文學寫作。
接著說一說為何用 were。
四種寫法情境不同：
1. If anyone is to V
單純表示 V 在未來可能發生。
2. If anyone be to V
同樣表示 V 在未來可能發生，但用 BE 動詞的現在虛擬式（present subjunctive），
即 be，多見於法律或極正式文件。
3. 4. If anyone was/were to V
假設語氣。表示說話者對未來 V 發生的機率持保留態度、認為「不大可能發生」。這裡，
可用BE 動詞的（第三人稱）簡單過去式（simple past、past indicative）was，
也可用其（第三人稱）虛擬過去式（past subjunctive）were，很多人喜歡用
were，尤其在正式書面語。如果把條件句 if anyone ...倒裝，則必須用 were，不能用
was。
: 2.假設語氣有個特徵是講「反話」；所以是不是「事實上」有人寫了proper的美洲史嗎？
: Smith是突出的人物嗎？上述英文句子的真正的涵義是？
從以上可知，Windschuttle 對未來「會不會有人好好寫一部史」感到保留。至於是不是
講反話，看你對反話的定義。但他確實認為 Smith 是突出人物，這絕對不是反話也沒有
保留。
