[請益] 某個英文句子的"真正"涵義(關於假設語氣?)
複製貼上某個英文句子。後半部感覺跟假設語氣有關(不知我有無理解錯誤)。
Prominent historian Keith Windschuttle refers to Smith as "one of the
outstanding intellectuals of American history", adding "were anyone to
write a proper history of ideas in America, Smith should figure prominently."
請問:
1.黃色的were,好像不是單純的疑問句,而是假設語氣?省略if anyone were to....?
2.假設語氣有個特徵是講「反話」;所以是不是「事實上」有人寫了proper的美洲史嗎?
Smith是突出的人物嗎?上述英文句子的真正的涵義是?
