Joe Torre's surprising choice of Chien-Ming Wang to start
tonight's Game 2 of the American League Division Series means we have to
dispense with some business before discussing the rookie's chances against the
Angels:

The wisdom of Torre's decision will be apparent at around 1 a.m. tomorrow when
Game 2 hits the late innings. Not that Torre is worried. Wang has demonstrated
a coolness under fire that he finds appealing; in the manager's mind, it was
just a matter of whether Wang was going to start Game 2 or 4.

That Torre chose Wang over Chacon, who was 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA in September,

the rookie has come since making his major-league debut April 30. Wang went 8-5
with a 4.02 ERA in 18 games (17 starts) despite missing two months with right
shoulder inflammation.

Nonetheless, Torre said he was impressed with his "demeanor" in the
pressure-packed atmosphere. He wasn't the only one.
