要解釋這個問題必須從三個方面來談：1.版本問題；2.Wordsworth慣用手法；3.上下文。
1. 版本問題：我查到Norton版的He是大寫。但Duncan Wu所編的
_Romanticism: An Anthology_ 2nd ed. (Oxford: Blackwell, 1998) 卻是小寫的he。
也就是說，不同的版本大小寫卻不ㄧ樣。當然如果只探討Wordsworth原來用的是He
還是he，必須查他1807年出版的 _Poems in Two Volumes_，以及看是否有手稿留下
來。
2. Wordsworth慣用手法：假設以Norton版為討論依據，我們可以看到Wordsworth在很多詩
中，常常把ㄧ些字大寫。以本詩為例，第五行的Stock-dove、第六行的Jay, Magpie、
第十五行的Traveller等等。這些都不是專有名詞，也就是說這是Wordsworth個人的喜
好罷了。
3. 上下文：如果說大寫的He就ㄧ定是指上帝的話，那麼第四十五行的Him也是指上帝嗎？
當然不是，這是指Robert Burns。也就是說，He或Him不ㄧ定是指上帝。而在此從上下
文來看，第四十行的He如果是指上帝的話，那下兩行提到him, his, himself也是應該
要大寫才對。既然沒大寫，那就不是指上帝了。
