As tribal baseball war had returned to the Bronx on a milky misty Monday
night, I figured I’d play anthropologist and find that most outlandish of
homo sapiens risk takers, the Red Sox fan in Yankee Stadium.
I wander the concourse and spot a portly fellow on the Miller Lite beer line
wearing a Red Sox cap and a Pedro Martinez jersey. I stop to ask after his
health and he puts finger to lips and shakes his head. No point in drawing
more attention to himself.
I wander by Section 233a when I spot them, the father and son team of Andy
Cohen-Cutler and Donald Cutler. Donald wears a Damon Red Sox jersey. Johnny
Damon was a once beloved Red Sox who committed the worst heresy of all and
chose to go to work for the Yankees.
Donald
Cutler。
For this apostasy, Donald has used masking tape to make an x across the Damon
name.
Nice touch, I remark.
“Thanks, we try,” he replies.
So you guys are embedded at Yankee Stadium. How do you plan to survive the
Bronx night?
Father and son share their secrets. Smile a lot at the natives and monitor
their beer intake. If that big mook in a Derek Jeter jersey begins to weave
and growl, back off, smiling, and maybe know where the security man stands.
If the Red Sox take a lead by the fifth inning, get quiet and stay that way.
As to their fan bona fides, the Cutler-Cohens, who have matching bald pates,
lack for nothing. Dad was born in Newton, Massachusetts, and his voice has
the broad A to prove his regional affiliation. They have lived on the West
Coast for many years without shedding a Yastrzemski-worth of their baseball
identity. They flew in from Los Angeles on the Sunday night red eye for this
game.
Two decades ago, they tried the same trick, flying to Boston for a
Yankees-Red Sox playoff showdown at Fenway. That game got rained out and
father and son flew out the next morning.
“Those are the most expensive hot dogs we’ve ever eaten,” says dad.
Dad saw Bucky Dent, the Yankee shortstop, hit his spike-through-the-heart
home run to beat the Red Sox in a season ending tiebreaker game in 1978. “We
say there’s an adjective missing in Dent’s name,” Donald notes.
A great roar arises. I turn around and look at the field as the public
address man introduces the teams. Yankee fans have just given a hearty cheer
to David Price, the Red Sox’ fine starting pitcher whose next postseason win
will be his first. Price imploded against the Yankees on Saturday, giving up
laser beams to all fields, and the Yankee fans wanted to let the pitcher to
know how much they appreciated his generosity.
David
The Cutler-Cohens nod. Nice touch; Bostonians and New Yorkers treat sarcasm
like a fine wine.
In a time when so many traditions have turned to homogenized milk, Yankees
versus Red Sox in the post season retains a jagged allure, even if the worse
moments no longer call to mind the Picts against the Angles on Jerome Avenue,
with tossed beers in the role of boiling pitch. That depraved time has
passed, and as an eyewitness to those wars I feel obliged to note that we’re
better for that.
I have my own peculiar perspective on this rivalry, as I grew up a deep-dyed
Mets fan, which is to say I wished nothing good on the team from the Bronx.
Unfortunately, the Mets in the late 1970s lost so relentlessly it was if they
had seceded from major league baseball. So my friends and I rode the subway
to the Bronx in search of real major league baseball. Once there, we rooted
for the enemy of our enemy, which is to say the Red Sox.
I explain this to the Culter-Cohens and they nod appreciatively. That is
twisted enough to dig.
As it turns out, the father and son had a most pleasant night in the Bronx.
The Red Sox players and coaches wore sweatshirts during batting practice
emblazoned: “Do Damage.” And damage they did, as the Red Sox took a 10-1
lead in the fourth inning and crested at 16-1 in the ninth inning.
The closest thing to suspense came in that fourth inning as the Yankee
starter Luis Severino imploded and Aaron Boone, the Yankee manager, failed to
pluck him off the mound. A worried murmur swept through the crowd; perhaps
Boone had fallen asleep; perhaps he had taken a shot of Ibogaine, the better
to endure pain without a muscle twitching.
Aaron
I wander by the Cutler-Cohens for the last time in the seventh inning. The
Red Sox lead stands at 11-1 and Donald is on his feet, doing a little
twitching jig. Dad remains seated, smiling.
“I think we’re good,” he said. “Everyone around us still seems friendly.”
I cautioned that they may just be dazed by the beat down. Never mistake Bronx
predators for friends, I say.
Good advice, says Dad.
