Jeremy Lin?
Linsanity Redux: How Much Does New York Miss Jeremy Lin?

Jeremy Lin?
However long Jeremy Lin’s career lasts, he’ll have a special
relationship with Madison Square Garden, the site of those magical
weeks in February 2012, when the undrafted, twice-dropped point
guard leapt off the Knicks bench to transform a broken team and
inspire not just the city, but the world.
He’ll hear echoes of the that rocked the rafters. He’ll see fans,
especially Asian American fans, in vintage Lin Knicks jerseys,
waving banners that refer to those glory days, and he’ll read
media reports loaded with puns based on his last name, many
of which will muse on what-might-have-been, had the Knicks
chosen to keep his effervescent playmaking and still-untapped
scoring potential on their roster.
They didn’t, of course — choosing to let him slide to the
Houston Rockets, who offered him a three-year, $25 million
deal to be starting point guard on a young, untested squad.
(The Rockets had been one of the teams that dropped Lin,
back in December 2011, due to their traffic jam at point —
he played a total of seven minutes in two pre-season games
before being informed, on Christmas Day no less, that he
was out of a job.)
Though Lin was reportedly surprised and upset that the Knicks
chose to let him go, he instantly embraced his new team and the
new start that the change of venue offered, especially with the
Rockets’ clear commitment to winning, demonstrated by their
lucrative signing of 6th man par excellence James Harden to
play alongside Lin. Given the chance to start, Harden instantly
demonstrated his game-changing talents, further establishing
himself as one of the league’s top scorers and becoming the
Rockets’ playmaking center of gravity.
But with Lin having a very similar game — and one that was
far less tested — the new backcourt had problems jelling.
Lin’s court smarts, deft ability to read and penetrate defenses
and disruptive cut-and-create game conflicted with Harden’s
need for as many touches as possible.
And with coach Kevin McHale directing the team to run plays
through and to Harden, Lin’s play swung wildly from brilliant to
terrible, and averaged out as, well…average. You don’t pay
over $8 million a year for average in the NBA (at least, not quite),
and you certainly don’t build a team around it. By the end of the
year, Lin found himself on the bench in the fourth quarter of games,
in favor of undistinguished journeyman Toney Douglas.
And when the season opened this year, despite Lin being perfectly
healthy and hungrier than ever to prove himself, it was announced
that Patrick Beverley, a scrap-heap candidate who’d spent his
career playing Euroleague basketball, would be the team’s
starting point guard.
People familiar with the matter say that despite Lin’s public
declarations of support for the move — being part of the
second team meant he had more opportunities to score and
make plays without metaphorically colliding with Harden and
new superstar center Dwight Howard — he was hurt by the
decision, particularly since he’d spent the summer working on
the two aspects of his game that had been repeatedly challenged
by fans and the media: His defense and his outside shooting.
“Jeremy has one of the most rigorous offseason workouts ever,” says
someone who should know — Evan Jackson Leong, director of the
documentary “Linsanity” (still in theaters now, in Los Angeles,
San Francisco and Virginia).
(Linsanity 目前仍在 Los Angeles, San Francisco and Virginia的電影院上映)
And in the season so far, Lin, coming off the bench, has
shown the results of his sweat and dedication: He’s shooting
well, averaging 18.4 points per game on 52.7% shooting
(and a sick 46.5% from behind the three-point line). To put
that in perspective, Lin is scoring the same number of points
per game right now as acknowledged superstar Dwyane
Wade of the Miami Heat, with better efficiency.
Over the past few games before his return to the Garden,
Lin had lifted his game, with 31 point and 34 point games
respectively, hitting a record nine three-point shots in
Thursday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers, a record
for the Houston franchise.
So it’s not surprising that Lin’s latest visit to New York was
being framed as Linsanity 2.0 (“Don’t Call It a Comeback”)
— despite his openly saying that he “didn’t think it would
be a big deal” and he “hoped to be a subplot” during the game.
Linsanity 2.0”
He wasn’t to the many fans who came out specifically to root
for him, like Ren Hsieh, founder of the Dynasty Project, a New
York-based nonprofit that works with youth in Asian immigrant
communities through organized athletics. “I’m a born and bred
Houston Rockets fan — born and raised in Houston,” says Hsieh.
“Jeremy being there is icing on the cake. But I’ve seen Jeremy
play plenty of times, college and NBA. I wouldn’t miss this one!
I begged a buddy for his season tickets, lower level section 110.”
就像是Ren Hsieh(紐約的無營利組織Dynasty Project的股東之一)
Other fans came from out of town to see the game, like
Ko Im, a reporter for the CBS local affiliate in Washington, D.C.,
who came up from the Beltway for the game. “I missed all the
initial craze, so I thought it would be awesome to go,” she says,
noting that her friend wore his Houston Lin jersey while she
sported a Linsanity Knicks tee. “There were definitely a lot of
his fans and Asians in the packed house, since it’s the only
time they play at MSG [this year],” she says. “I’m glad
I checked it off my bucket list.”
T-Shirt
Lin responded to the crowd and the challenge of his former
team with another sterling game — 21 points, three assists
and five rebounds, not taking over the game but meshing
well with his team, and totally outplaying both starting PG
Patrick Beverley(five points, just two assists) and his
replacement as Knicks point guard, Raymond Felton (eight
points, seven assists, but five turnovers and five fouls).
He even unleashed a neat right-handed dunk, which drew
even Knicks loyalists out of their seats to their reluctant feet,
experiencing a flash of Linsanity nostalgia.
Felton
Which brings us to the obligatory hypothetical: What if the
Knicks had kept him, despite his steep price tag, late-season
injury and uneven post-February play? What if they’d given
him the kind of longer term investment that he’d hoped for and
his fans had been expecting, given the massive goodwill and
merchandise value that the Knicks had accrued with Lin in
New York? As New York Times’s veteran sports scribe
Harvey Araton notes, “Lin, as an Asian American sensation, was
probably worth $2 in commercial appeal for every $1 he was paid.”
But the Knicks made the short-sighted decision to let Lin go.
And now, Linsanity — at least the New York edition —
is memories, echoes and nostalgia.
Maybe for the better. Some pundits have noted that in a smaller
market, with bigger stars alongside him (Lin publicly calls
Harden and Howard the “faces of the [Rockets] franchise”),
Lin has had the freedom to work out the kinks of his game,
without the pressure of the media’s piercing glare.
“At this point, i have no doubt that hes gonna do this again,
and play this good [indefinitely],” says Leong. “The doubters
can doubt, and haters can hate, but Jeremy can play.”
Which is why even some of his biggest Asian American fans,
like Hsieh, agree that the time has come for us to move on from
“Linsanity.” “It’s time for a Linsanity moratorium,” he says.
“It’s contextualized, it’s past. Let it lie as a great piece of sports
history. To call out Linsanity every time Lin has a good game
only serves to diminish his actual talent. Like he has to be going
insane to pull it off. No, he’s just actually a good player.
He doesn’t have to be ‘Linsane’ to do it.”
Point made, point taken. But you’ll excuse some of us if we
still obsessively watch his highlights and cheer to ourselves
every time he delivers an on-screen reminder of those crazy,
heady days. Call it “Linstant Replay.”
Linstant Replay.”
~END~
