[求譯] the greatest mistranslations ever
Freeman said: “I cannot explain the confusion about Zhou’s comment
except in terms of the extent to which it conveniently bolstered a stereotype
(as usual with all stereotypes, partly perceptive) about Chinese statesmen
as far-sighted individuals who think in longer terms than their Western
counterparts.
這是一篇文章叫做“The greatest mistranslations ever”，講到過去因為翻譯錯誤而
導致歷史改變的一些例子。其中，1972年尼克森訪問中國時，周恩來針對法國發生的革命
說「現在評論其影響，還太早了」，美國人以為周恩來在講18世紀末的法國大革命，因此
對周恩來大為佩服，認為中國領導人看待事情的眼光比較長遠;但事實上周恩來只是在講
1968法國發生的事情。當時尼克森總統的翻譯官Charles Freeman，事後回想這場「美麗
的誤會」，認為語言上的誤解，有時反而有助於外交場合氣氛和諧，促進合作。
我想問的是：
上面Charles Freeman說的那段話要怎麼翻譯（尤其是"except in terms of..."那邊）
我知道大概意思，說美國對中國人都有刻板印象、覺得中國人好像都很有哲理，
但不知道確切應該怎麼翻，懇請高手解答。
