But the use of the singular verb in these constructions is common, even among
the best writers, and the Usage Panel has a long history of division on this
matter. In our 1965 survey, 42 percent of the Usage Panel accepted the use of
the singular verb in such constructions. Nearly forty years later the
Panel's opinion was almost unchanged: in 2001, 40 percent rejected 'were' in
the sports car example quoted above.
關於Farhady、Van Shaik兩人的調查與Heritage Guide的比較，
40%的panel成員專家可接受描述性文法的單數動詞，卻不是100%
panel成員都拘泥在必須符合傳統文法的複數動詞。
再仔細以人口取樣金字塔推敲，專家級應在金字塔上端，普遍英文
母語人士(即，不只包括專家級)可接受單數動詞的比例，應很有機
會大於百分之五十。畢竟我們不可能對每一位英文母語人士來一一
調查。以語料取樣理論看，應該是可能的？因為只需突破十個百分點。
