Step back for Hughes, step forward for Wang
BY ERIK BOLAND | erik.boland@newsday.com
CLEVELAND - Let the debate begin anew.
Phil Hughes, with Chien-Ming Wang feeling and looking ready to start,
took a step backward yesterday. Just how big has yet to be determined,
and the decider didn't tip his hand after the Yankees' 5-4 loss to the
Indians.
Hughes, coming off a three-hit, eight-inning outing in Texas, had one
bad inning against the Indians and an overall unimpressive line: four
runs in five innings.
Wang then shut out the Indians for three innings with a plunging sinker
and velocity that consistently reached 93 mph, giving the Yankees a
chance to come back from a 4-0 deficit.
They did just that, tying it on Mark Teixeira's two-run homer in the
sixth and two-run double in the eighth. But they lost with one out in
the ninth as Phil Coke (1-3) issued a leadoff walk and David Robertson
gave up a walk-off single to Jhonny Peralta.
The Yankees played their 17th straight errorless game, tying the
major-league record set by Boston in June 2006, but lost for the
fourth time in 18 games.
In three relief outings, Wang has allowed two runs in eight innings
after giving up 23 runs in six innings as a starter and going on the
disabled list to strengthen his hips. "We've talked all along that we
believe Chien-Ming Wang is a starter, and at some point we believe he's
going to be in this rotation,'' Joe Girardi said. "I'm not ready to say
that right now. I love the way he is throwing the ball . . . and he
helped us out a lot. As time goes on, we'll continue to evaluate
everybody.''
Hughes has said before, and did again yesterday, that he's not worried
about the math of six-pitchers-for-five-spots. "Not really,'' he said.
"Just go out every time they give you the ball and just pitch as well
as you can.''
Wang, meanwhile, said, "I'm ready.'' He threw 42 pitches and said he
could have gone 70 to 80 pitches if necessary. He struck out three and
got four groundouts, which is key for him.
Wang did acknowledge it might take "a little bit of time'' to work
up to starter level in terms of his stamina, though Girardi didn't
sound concerned. Not after seeing the sharp sink and velocity, something
that hadn't consistently been the case, Wang said, since before he
suffered a Lisfranc sprain of the right foot last June 15.
"We haven't seen it for 100 pitches but we saw it for 42,'' Girardi
said, "and it was real good.''
The Yankees weren't all that good against Carl Pavano, shut out
until Teixeira brought them to within 4-2 with his 16th home run.
Derek Jeter, who extended his hitting streak to 14 games in the
first inning, singled off Pavano with one out in the eighth. Rafael
Perez allowed a double to Johnny Damon, and after Rafael Betancourt
suffered a groin injury on his third pitch to Teixeira, Matt Herges
allowed a long two-run double off the left-centerfield wall that
tied it at 4.
Coke walked Trevor Crowe to start the ninth, and after Asdrubal
Cabrera twice bunted foul, he successfully bunted Crowe to second.
Robertson walked Ben Francisco before Peralta turned on a 3-and-1
fastball and grounded a shot over third base to win it. "I just
didn't do the job today,'' Robertson said.
But Wang did and Hughes not as much, leaving a rotation spot still
very much in question.
