[歐洲] 14世紀米蘭修士的記錄中已出現美洲的記述

米蘭大學的中世紀拉丁文學教授 Paolo Chiesa
今年7月16日發表在期刊《Terrae Incognitae》Volume 53, 2021-Issue 2 的論文：

簡介：
米蘭大學的中世紀拉丁文學 Paolo Chiesa 教授及其團隊，
在一份由14世紀中期米蘭的一位修士 Galvano Fiamma
所撰寫的編年史著作《Cronica universalis》裡，
發現了關於美洲大陸的敘述。
被提到的是「Markland」（Marckalada）
是 Leif Erikson 的傳說裡抵達的地方之一（Helluland、Markland、Vinland）

由北到南，學者普遍認為分別是現在加拿大的巴芬島、拉不拉多海岸、紐芬蘭。
這是首次發現，關於格陵蘭以西土地（美洲）之敘述，
在地中海地區（北歐地區以外）流傳的證據。
這比哥倫布發現美洲的時間，還早了約150年。
人物：
Galvano Fiamma（1286～1345）
天主教道明會（Dominicans）的修士
居住在米蘭，是當時米蘭的統治者 領主 Giovanni Visconti 的專職司鐸。
除了從事聖職之外，也編寫許多歷史著作。

Galvano Fiamma 晚年未完成之作，成書於1339～1345年之間
本來預定有十五冊，從創世紀寫到當時，
但實際完成的部分只到第四冊中間，在猶大王國 King Joas 的地方停止。
本論文提到關於 Markland 的敘述
出現在第三冊（亞伯拉罕 到 大衛王）的「附記」裡，
附記裡記載當時異國的地理，包含遠東、北極、海島、非洲。
他參考了許多來源，
包含了二世紀的 Isidorus 與 三世紀 Gaius Julius Solinus 等人的學術著作，
以及當代的旅行者如 Marco Polo 與 Odoric of Pordenone 等人的記錄
有時也會引用書信，例如遠赴中國傳教的方濟會 Giovanni of Montecorvino
以及熱那亞的司鐸與製圖者 Giovanni of Carignano 所繪的「Tractatus de mappa」
本篇論文的作者 Paolo Chiesa 教授
是根據《Cronica universalis》留存至今的唯一手抄本來進行研究
此手抄本是由14世紀末期米蘭的一位職業抄寫者（copyist）
Pietro Ghioldi 所抄寫的。
1996年由一位美國收藏家以 14,950 美元的價格
在佳士得公司的拍賣中買下，現存紐約。
該收藏家同意 Paolo Chiesa 教授以拍照的方式進行研究。

[Our] authorities say that under the equator there are very high mountains,
where there are temperate settlements, made possible by winds, or by the
shadow of the mountains, or by the remarkable thickness of the walls, or by
underground caves in valleys. At the equator there are also many islands that
are truly temperate because of the rivers, or the marshes, or the winds, or
for reasons that are unknown to us.
記錄說，在赤道之下有非常高的山，那裡適合定居，也許是因為風，或山的影子，或非
凡的厚牆，或山谷裡的地下洞穴。在赤道上也有許多小島十分宜居，因為河流、沼澤，
或是風，或是我們不知道的原因。
And for a similar reason there are settlements beneath or around the Arctic
pole, despite the very intense cold. These settlements are so temperate that
people cannot die there: this fact is well known for Ireland. The reasons
why this happens are unknown to us. Marco Polo speaks explicitly about this,
when he says that there is a certain desert 40 days across where nothing
grows, neither wheat nor wine, but the people live by hunting birds and
animals, and they ride deers.

Further northwards there is the Ocean, a sea with many islands where a great
quantity of peregrine falcons and gyrfalcons live. These islands are located
so far north that the Polar Star remains behind you, toward the south.
Sailors who frequent the seas of Denmark and Norway say that northwards,
beyond Norway, there is Iceland; further ahead there is an island named
Grolandia, where the Polar Star remains behind you, toward the south. The
governor of this island is a bishop. In this land, there is neither wheat nor
wine nor fruit; people live on milk, meat, and fish. They dwell in
subterranean houses and do not venture to speak loudly or to make any noise,
for fear that wild animals hear and devour them. There live huge white bears,
which swim in the sea and bring shipwrecked sailors to the shore. There live
white falcons capable of great flights, which are sent to the emperor of
Katai. Further westwards there is another land, named Marckalada, where
giants live; in this land, there are buildings with such huge slabs of stone
that nobody could build with them, except huge giants. There are also green
trees, animals and a great quantity of birds. However, no sailor was ever
able to know anything for sure about this land or about its features.
更往北方有一片海，其上的眾多小島有大量的遊隼與矛隼。這些小島因為有夠靠北，
北極星在你的背後，朝向南方了。時常往來丹麥與挪威的水手們說，向北到挪威之外

From all these facts it is clear that there are settlements at the Arctic
pole.

從記述中可以看得出來 Galvano Fiamma 也許混淆了一些東西
像提到馬可波羅那裡，沙漠可能是他在阿爾泰山時的記錄
以及 Markland 有許多板石，這應該是與 Helluland（板石之地）混淆了。
或是有一些誇大的描述，像是北極星的方位以及巨人。

在這之前，中世紀關於 Markland 的敘述，都只出現在北歐
像是 Eirik the Red's Saga、
Saga of Greenlanders、
Skalholtsannall（Annals of Iceland）
或是 Heimslysing、
Leiðarvisir
等傳說或著作裡。
Galvano Fiamma 的這段記述，是首次在北歐以外的史料裡
見到關於 Markland 的敘述。
Paolo Chiesa 教授認為，雖然內容可能有混淆或誇大
但這段記述仍有其可信之處。
Galvano Fiamma 在寫作時非常注重引用的來源
會標示出處、寫下註記甚至畫底線標明，
然而，他的這段記述，資訊是從哪裡得到的呢？
截至目前的研究，他一生甚至從未離開過義大利北部。
教授的假設是，他的資訊來源來自「水手們的口耳相傳」
從這段記述中的細節即可發現（星象、交易猛禽、白熊會帶遭難水手上岸）
內文也有提到「時常往來丹麥與挪威的水手」
原文是：marinarii qui conversantur in mari Datie et Norvegye
水手們可能從他們北歐的同行那裡，聽到 Leif Erikson 與新大陸的傳說。
而米蘭位於內陸，不會是水手們的特定目的地，
合理的推測是距離米蘭最近的海港：Genoa 熱那亞
Galvano Fiamma 可能從熱那亞獲得第一手或第二手資訊
在《Cronica universalis》的其他段落裡，時常可以發現他引用來自熱那亞的資訊。
道明會在義大利北部的「studium generale」（教育機構）
在1304～1320年之間，開設在熱那亞，
Galvano Fiamma 也許在那裡學習過，或是返回米蘭後，持續與熱那亞的修士保持連絡。
另外一個推測是，這段記述的年代，比哥倫布發現美洲還早了大約150年
有沒有可能哥倫布聽說過這段流傳在他的家鄉熱那亞的水手傳說？
甚至可能是激勵他出航的動機？
