Safin Wins And Reveals He Is Running For Parliament
Marat Safin began his new career on the ATP Champions Tour with a 6-2, 6-3
win over Wayne Ferreira in Chengdu, China, and then revealed that he is
running for parliament in Moscow.
Safin, who topped the tennis world more than a decade ago, showed all of his
trademark power and skill during the match and his famous sense of humour
after it.
When it came to discussing his plans to run for election to the State Duma on
December 4th, however, he was very serious.
"I am running for Federal Parliament in Russia," he confirmed. "The elections
are on December 4th so I will find out soon. It's a new challenge. I think I
am an intelligent guy and I have a lot to bring and a lot of ideas about
things and what to do. I am very committed to it."
Then, just before things became too serious, he added with a smile:
"I could be the best looking guy in the Duma, but that's only because all the
other guys are over 60."
Safin is already working with the Russian Tennis Federation and on the Board
of the Russian Olympic Committee, but it was clear he has kept himself in
good shape as he dismissed Ferreira.
"For an old guy I played well today," said Safin, who turns 32 in January.
“This is my first Champions Tour tournament and of course I am nervous. Some
of the players here I grew up with and some I played in my professional
career so it’s a pleasure to be on the same court with them. We spent many
years on the courts together as opponents and here we are more like friends
and family. I’m happy to be here. I’ll try to beat all the guys but also be
respectful to them. Of course it’s different but I’m really comfortable
here on the Champions Tour with these guys. This is the right level for me
now and I’m happy to be here.”
He also raised a smile by informing the media that he had arrived to Chengdu
with only two racquets. "I am having 100 delivered tomorrow," said the
Russian, who added that he had broken 1,055 racquets during his competitive
playing career.
Elsewhere in Group A, Younes El Aynaoui caused a shock by beating Pete
Sampras 6-4, 7-6(2), and in a battle between the No.1 and No.2 players in the
South African Airways Rankings - Mark Philippoussis and Carlos Moya - it was
Moya who prevailed. The Spaniard triumphed 7-5, 6-2. The other match of the
day saw Thomas Enqvist overcome Paradorn Srichaphan 6-3, 6-3.
