[外電] Stoudemire issues mount for Suns

NEW YORK - After the Suns' worst loss of the season, the fingers can point
just about anywhere, but much of the fans' wrath starts with reason No. 1, as
in the franchise player's number.
Amaré Stoudemire scored three points Monday at Boston. It was his career's
worst scoring game in which he played at least 30 minutes. It also was his
most precipitous game-to-game dropoff, after scoring 31 on Sunday.
The frustrations with Stoudemire are not solely about offense, although
Sunday's 30-point game was only his third of the season. He had 21 30-point
games last season under Mike D'Antoni, whose Knicks host the Suns today, and
13 of the 21 came after Shaquille O'Neal was acquired in February.
There are ongoing issues with Stoudemire's lapses on defense and rebounding.
His mistakes on rotations and weak-side help can't be numerated, except that
they are part of how the Suns are giving up more points than any potential
playoff team. Since Thanksgiving, the Suns have held three opponents in the
90s.
"We didn't come close to making them feel our presence at all on the floor,"
Suns coach Terry Porter said of Monday's loss at Boston.
In the past 11 games, Stoudemire has averaged 5.7 rebounds. Small forward
Matt Barnes has grabbed a rebound this season about as often (one per 4.9
minutes) as Stoudemire (one per 4.6 minutes).
It was a rough night all around Monday, when the Suns trailed by 32 with 3:26
to go in the first half, with Stoudemire and Jason Richardson scoreless.
Stoudermire said it was the Celtics strategically aimed to "take me out of
the game plan offensively."
"He got a couple calls that just didn't go his way," Porter said of
Stoudemire, who was defended and often fronted by fill-in Celtics starter
Brian Scalabrine. "When he did take it, he wasn't aggressive. He had a tough
night. Everybody has those. He never really got into a rhythm. I thought he
was engaged. He just never got into a rhythm. Those guys bumped us off our
spots. We didn't do a good job of getting to our spots and being physical and
strong with the ball."
Baskets came easily for Stoudemire on Sunday in Toronto. He made 12 shots,
with Steve Nash assisting on nine.
If he is not involved in screen play with Nash, Stoudemire is often left to
linger on the weak side as O'Neal posts up. He is getting fewer of his
baskets at the rim this season (62.5 percent) than last (70.0 percent) and is
not converting as many elbow jumpers (43 percent, down from 51).
He has talked about wanting to be the go-to guy, getting back to striking
fear in opponents and getting his "gorilla game" on. But he has gone from
being nearly voted into the All-Star Game starting lineup to potentially
being left out of the game in Phoenix, especially if the Suns keep skidding.
They have lost three of four games but finish this trip with New York,
Charlotte, Atlanta and Washington over six days. Of those, only Atlanta's
winning percentage is above .400. After a similar pasting from Detroit last
season, the Suns lost four of their next six games.
"For sure, our guys are going to come back and respond," Porter said.
"They're going to compete and play much harder than we did."
