[新聞] Hughes' game plan vs. Vlad backfires
ANAHEIM -- It was never really a debate. Phil Hughes had found success
pounding Vladimir Guerrero with fastballs in the past, so once he put two
strikes on Guerrero in the seventh inning Thursday with nothing short of
a World Series berth on the line, Hughes knew exactly what he wanted to throw.
Fastball, up. Way up.

The result, however, was not quite what Hughes envisioned in the Yankees'
7-6 loss in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. That fastball?
It darted straight into the middle of the zone. And Guerrero? He smacked it up
the middle for a critical game-tying single, helping the Angels pull within
one game, at 3-2, in this best-of-seven ALCS.

It was a physical error, not a mental one. Hughes had confidence in his
mid-90s fastball, and for good reason -- it's been kind to him all year.
And had Hughes thrown a good one, up and out of the strike zone, he likely
would have achieved his intended result.

It was also a mistake that could not be pinned on manager Joe Girardi --
not entirely, at least. Hughes was in a jam in part because Girardi had asked
his starter, A.J. Burnett, to return to the mound for one final inning in the
seventh. Burnett, who had thrown 80 pitches heading into the inning and who
had retired seven of the previous eight batters he faced, seemed like the right
choice at the time to Girardi.

But retrospect has a way of coloring these situations differently. Burnett
allowed a hit to the first batter he faced and walked the second, before
Girardi appeared on the field to remove him.

eighth and Mariano Rivera in the ninth-- as he has done all postseason
to date.

The result was a three-run rally, with Guerrero's single off Hughes smack
in the middle of it. By that point, all Burnett could do was watch.

"It's very disappointing," Hughes said. "We did a great job tonight
