Is China Exporting Its Own McCarthyism? This apology video trigger the most sensitive topic between China and Taiwan, right before Taiwan president election day We don't normally see an artist apologize to the public, let alone for the reason represented in this video: she apologized for her nationality and place of birth. Tzu-Yu Chou, a Taiwan born, 16 years old artist in TWICE, a girl group under South Koren JYP Entertainment, has to do so today. After she publicly said that she is from Taiwan in multiple media interview in South Korea, An Huang, a Chinese artist, posted a series of Weibo (China's Twitter equivalent) and accused Tzu-Yu Chou is "pro-Taiwan independent". TWICE's effort to get into China market started to get impacted immediately after An Huang's post triggered widespread discussion in several Chinese on line forum. Huawei, the Chinese smartphone brand, has reportedly canceled the contract with Chou. In reaction to the fury from Chinese on line forum, on the evening of Jan 15th, JPY Entertainment released the apology video on Youtube and Weibo. In the video Chou apologized to all Chinese by reading a pre-written statement saying that she is Chinese and she recognizes and support "One China" policy, which means there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China. Chinese government has treated Taiwan as renegaded province since Communist won Chinese Civil War in 1949, and has never gave up "reclaiming Taiwan" by force, although Taiwan has been self-governing after 1949 and has been democratized since 1990's. The video intensifies the concern over increasing China threat and influence in the coming Taiwan election. According to Taiwan government survey, majority of Taiwanese prefer to maintain the democratic and self-ruling status quo rather than being forced to unite with China. The video has further intensified the concern among Taiwanese, that China is trying to alter the status quo through imbalanced political and economic power. To Taiwanese, what happens to Chou because of An Huang's behavior clearly illustrates that China might be exporting its own McCarthyism, of which all interaction between China and Taiwan must follow the "One China" policy, even it's for a 16 young girl without any political background like Chou, or even for companies not related to Taiwan.
