Dustin Pedroia has been playing through a complete tear of the ulnar
collateral ligament in his left thumb.
It's believed that the injury occurred on a headfirst slide into first base
on Opening Day against the Yankees. While the normal timeline for such an
injury is about eight weeks, Pedroia didn't miss any time. In fact, he has
played in every game with the Red Sox this season. "People shouldn’t know if
you’re 100percent or not. It is what it is, and it’s my responsibility to perform
well," said Pedroia. "My mindset is if I’m nicked up, I have to find other
ways to perform. That’s the way I think about it. Maybe I’m crazy." While
one could argue that the thumb has impacted his ability to drive the ball,
he's still batting .332/.422/.444 through 53 games. The Red Sox and fantasy
owners will have to hope that he can tolerate the pain and delay the
possibility of surgery until the offseason.
