Seconded for labeling drives (via GPT partition+label in my case) after the serial number of the drive. It does require powering down the server to replace a drive to be on the safest side, but if you can live with that then it seems like a good idea. Walk into the server room with a hardcopy (printout) from 'zpool status' and know for certain that you have the correct drive pulled. Manufacturer labels don't fall off, and they don't get stuck on the wrong drive by accident. -- Kevin P.
