With the advent of projection, the viewer's relationship with the image
was no longer private, as it had been with earlier peepshow devices
such as the Kinetoscope and the Mutoscope, which was a similar machine
that reproduced motion by means of successive images on individual
photographic cards instead of on strips of celluloid.
這段文字指的是早期的 peepshow devices 是 "private" 的，只能一個人看
舉例來說早期的 peeshow device 有 Kinetoscope 和 Mutoscope
但是因為這邊 Mutoscope 在文章中第一次出現所以用 which was 那段來解釋
