acountics 去查字典的話~ 當音響效果解時是用複數沒錯
純粹當物理學"聲音"解時才是單數
跟effect一樣~ 若effect要用來表光或聲音的"效果"時~也是可以變複數

: A:2 (A team of 不是就要單數了嗎?)
集合名詞你要先從句意去判斷一下它是強調整體還是強調個體
這句是"這個engineer的team要幹嘛幹嘛"
若強調整體用單數~ 代表是強調"這個team"要去參加會議等等...
若強調個體用複數~ 代表的是"這個team的每個人" 都要去會議並且要提出報告
文法上來說碰到這種集合名詞後要接單複數都沒有對或錯
端看說話者本身要強調的語意要有多精準
可是考試是很無聊又很死相的....所以還是建議以比較精準的語意去答題比較容意對!

你()的部份是文法書會寫的~ 但你漏掉了一個重點
The number of + 複數名詞 = 用單數
A number of + 複數名詞 = 用複數
回頭看看題目~ 很明顯不是在考這條文法喔!!!
這裡的number不是在當量詞...就是很直覺的是"號碼"的意思...
題目意思大概是"在Kentucky Derby的賽馬number每一年都會改變"
我是不懂賽馬~ 但你可以想成主詞是 The number 就是了 (不管它在指賽馬的什麼)
那既然number用單數...後面就接單數就是了
: 4. The pair of mittens left on the school bus (1.belongs 2.belong)
: to either Jo or her younger sister.
: A:1 (老師說過，pair沒加S的話用單數，那為什麼這裡是複數?)
: EX(習題):The pair of lazy ceiling fans(1.were 2.was) doing little

這裡你好像搞錯了
belongs是單數沒錯啊...

前面通通不要管意思
全部省略成 "There were the victims" 就好 (那裡都是受害者)
不管你要把There當成"那裡的~" "那些的~" "那邊的~~" 都可代入解

你強者同學是對的!! 你可能要再翻翻文法書去看看動詞單複數的詳細定義.......

我有點不明白out of the ruins of Turkey有啥典故有意義
但我會直覺的認為前面一整段可以簡化成一個單一名詞子句
既然是單一的某樣東西隱含有一個故事存在
就簡化成 "This" emerages a story 就好...
不過請小心emerages 是單數!
其實我個人覺的考這種是很無聊的...
既然它都用考試的方式來出題~
那我就純粹用考試方式的來解題...
