By the way, a good way to find out if you're running low on RAM is to watch the output from "vmstat 5" for a while. (Ignore the first line because it contains the values since reboot.) In particular, if the "po" (page out) and "sr" (scan rate) columns stay at zero most of the time, then there are no problems. The "scan rate" is a good way to measure the memory pressure that Matt explained. (Don't worry if the "pi" (page in) column is non-zero, because it includes normal system activity such as reading pages from memory-mapped files.)
