Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski announced the trade here during Monday's game with the Washington Nationals. "He will join us tomorrow and will be on the major league club," Dombrowski said. "He gives us a dimension we don't have, which is speed. He hits well and is good defensively. He's a good center fielder." Anderson, 26, hit .294 with three home runs, 12 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 40 games and 136 at-bats last year for the Braves. He stole 42 bases in 121 games for Triple-A Richmond. "I'm anxious to see him," Leyland said. "We were trying to get a piece (that fits) and we got a nice piece." Leyland said Anderson, a skilled bunter, would be best pinch-hitting in the leadoff spot. He mentioned starting him some in a corner outfield spot to provide another speed element beside center fielder Curtis Granderson. Dombrowski said Anderson, 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, is the fastest player on the team. He will get the final position player roster spot unless Detroit trades reserve outfielder Marcus Thames, who hit 25 homers last year. Dombrowski said it "was possible" but "not likely" that another outfielder would be dealt. But unless that happens, outfielders Brent Clevlen, Ryan Raburn and Clete Thomas and corner infielder Jeff Larish likely won't make the club. They've been the four players competing for the final spot. Whether to deal Thames and keep Larish, a left-handed power hitter who also can play the corner outfield spots, is one dilemma Dombrowski and Leyland have in the final days of spring training. Anderson, a 2003 fourth-round pick of the Houston Astros from Eastern Kentucky University, hit .358 in 67 at-bats with the Astros in 2007.
