May 3, 2008 -- HANK Steinbrenner marveled at how Chien-Ming WangChien-Ming Wang
pitched the YankeesNew York Yankees to victory last night, beating the
Mariners 5-1 at Yankee Stadium. But The New Boss knows it's going to take more
than just Wang to take the Yankees where they want to go this season and beyond.
"I'm upset about the way this thing is going," he told The Post last night from
Tampa, citing the injuries the Yankees have had and their 15-16 start.
"We have to find a way to right this ship."
Steinbrenner is as determined a Boss as his father, and to that end, he has
talked to the front office about coming up with creative ideas to try to make a
move to improve the club, such as adding a veteran starter, which is not easy
to do this time of year.
"I know it's difficult," Hank said, "but I've talked to [GM] Brian Cashman and
I want him to bring me every idea the front office has. I want them to rack
their brains to see what we can come up with, and I've been in contact with
some of the people who built the championship teams from the late 90s, people
like Stick Michael.
"We'll figure out what we have to do. We owe it to the fans."
They sure do. The fan support has been incredible, and Steinbrenner appreciates
that support. The Yankees announced last night that they have exceeded 4
million tickets sold for the season, becoming the first franchise in
major-league history to reach that total in four consecutive seasons.
Though the Yankees have been hit with some fluke injuries that have sidelined
three-time MVP Alex RodriguezAlex Rodriguez and All-Star catcher Jorge Posada,
Steinbrenner said he still wants to see more of that "old spark."
That's exactly what he saw last night as they snapped a three-game losing
streak in beating the always difficult Erik Bedard.
"It's time to snap out of it," Steinbrenner said. "They played with a spark
tonight. I just want to see more of a spark, and they are capable of doing that.
"That's nothing against Joe Girardi, he's done a good job," Steinbrenner added.
"We'll make sure he gets the players he needs to succeed."
He also said young pitchers such as Darrell Rasner, who pitches Sunday, deserve
a chance because he has pitched so well in the minor leagues. Steinbrenner also
preached patience when it comes to the young pitchers, saying he is still
solidly behind the likes of Phil Hughes, who is out two months with a fractured
rib, and Ian Kennedy, who has struggled in all his starts this season.
"Sometimes I even forget how young they are," Steinbrenner admitted. "Hughes
should only be a senior in college now. We're not going to panic."
When Wang was Hughes' age, 21, he sat out the entire 2001 season following
arthroscopic shoulder surgery, and when Wang was Kennedy's age, 23, he was
posting a 4.65 ERA at Double-A Trenton.
That puts into perspective how young those two pitchers are, and the
expectations in front of them. Steinbrenner made it clear again that everyone
is on board with the Joba Plan, where eventually setup man Joba Chamberlain is
moved into the starting rotation.
"He's got to be brought along properly - I understand that," Steinbrenner said.
"He did another wonderful job tonight. I can't say enough how much I like our
young kids.
"These are special kids, and Hughes and Kennedy are going to be fine.
"Wang has been unbelievable. He's a true stopper. He's one of the top five
starting pitchers in baseball. Believe me, we'll do what we have to do to right
this ship."
Hank Steinbrenner insists these Yankees will find a way to succeed.
