Wang is right

For a guy who is not "dominant," not an "ace," Chien-Ming Wang sure wins a
lot of games. That's 41 since the start of the '06 season, more than
anyone in baseball.
"People want to make a lot out of two postseason starts," Joe Girardi said
after Wang's two-hitter agianst the Red Sox Friday. "Well. C.C. Sabathia
won the Cy Young Award and he had some trouble in the postseason. It
happens."
Wang, of course, pitched a great game at Anaheim in the '05 Division
Series and beat the Tigers in Game 1 in '06. He was whacked around by the
Indians last year. My theory:
There was a big game against Seattle early last September, where Wang
pitched seven great innings. In the bottom of the seventh, the Yankees
scored a bunch of runs and, though the game was like 12-1 and Wang had
been sitting about 45 minutes, they sent him back out there to start the
eighth. He came out after a couple of pitches, having "stiffened up."
Coincidence or not, he was not the same after that, the rest ofSeptember
or in the playoffs. I've always suspected he hurt his back and couldn't
bend to get his ball to sink.
Anyway, he's expanding his repertiore now, and using both sides of the
plate and that could bump him up a level. Because hitters put the ball in
play against him, he'll probably never be considered a dominant ace, but
his ability to go deep into games with few pitches will always make him a
big winner with the Yankees, who tend to score late.
