Retiring Sugiyama given fond farewell

TOKYO: Former Japanese doubles world number one Ai Sugiyama received an
emotional reception on Sunday at the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament her
final event before retirement.
At a special ceremony the 34-year-old thanked fans for their support and
fellow players for their friendship during her 17-year career, during which
she made a record 62 consecutive appearances in the main draw of the Grand
Slams.
"I am truly grateful and feel so blessed that I am retiring with such a
wonderful ceremony before so many people," she said, addressing thousands of
fans on the centre court of Tokyo's Ariake Colosseum as her mother looked on.
"I have been blessed with all the wonderful friends and opportunities to be
able to compete at the highest level," said Sugiyama, who won three Grand
Slam women's doubles titles and was a singles quarter-finalist in the 2000
Australian Open and at Wimbledon in 2004.
"Tennis has given me so much. It has allowed me to meet so many people. I
would like to give back what I received maybe through tennis, maybe through
other sporting activities," said Sugiyama, who will play Nadia Petrova of
Russia in the first round.
Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, Sugiyama's doubles partner, gave a tearful
speech, thanking the Japanese player for friendship on and off the court.
"I have learned so much from you not only as a tennis player, but also as a
person, how to treat people, how to behave with fans, with the media,"
Hantuchova said.
Sugiyama, who reached the number one ranking in doubles in 2000, attained a
career-high singles ranking of eight in 2004.
