Lionel Messi Cannot Orchestrate For Argentina - Cesar Menotti
Argentina's tactics and inability to prepare are the reasons Messi cannot
perform for the national team. In addition, Menotti believes that the
Barcelona star is expected to do everything for the team...
Cesar Menotti has hit out at Lionel Messi's critics, stating that the
Barcelona star is able to play for his club but has to run and run for his
national team.
The veteran trainer, who led the Albiceleste to World Cup glory in 1978,
thinks that blaming the diminutive Blaugrana forward is unacceptable because
of his differing roles with club and country.
Despite helping Argentina to a crucial win at the weekend, Messi was again
highlighted as under-performing, and that has drawn Menotti's ire.
"Argentina do not yet have a functioning team. They have not had the time to
find that unity and team play," he told Sport.
"That is completely different from the way that Messi does things with
Barcelona. He started at the club, then was on the bench and then began to
play for a few minutes before claiming a regular place.
"Messi is not responsible for the strategy at Barcelona. That is [Andres]
Iniesta, Xavi and [Yaya] Toure.
"Messi is the one that completes the moves.
"When it comes to Argentina they expect Messi to cope with he strategy of the
team, to create goals and score them, to do everything.
"The team runs around a lot because they play badly. There they need to run
more. But this is a football team, not a marathon club.
"Messi plays for Barcelona, but [with] Argentina he runs."
Menotti then explained why he feels that Diego Maradona has been unable to
create a team out of so many stars.
"The team has not yet reached the level that was expected. The Argentina side
have not had a coach for a long time," he continued.
"Not because they do not know how to, but because they are not able to
because there is not enough time as all the players are in Europe.
"You cannot direct a great orchestra if the musicians are in Roma and the
conductor is in Buenos Aires."

Argentina Fans Criticise Messi As They Dare Not Criticise Maradona -
Barcelona Director Perrin
Playing overseas does not help Messi, according to the director...
Barcelona director Albert Perrin has declared that criticism is being
directed at Lionel Messi from some quarters in Argentina, because they dare
not criticise coach Diego Maradona, according to Marca.
Argentina have struggled through the World Cup qualifying campaign to this
point, and they go into their last game needing a victory over Uruguay in
Montevideo to guarantee their spot at the finals in South Africa.
Unfortunately for his sake, Messi has borne the brunt of the fans'
frustration at the Albicelestes lacklustre performances.
"The coach is none other than Maradona. The figurehead of the national
selection is Maradona and criticising him is difficult, so instead they
criticise the head of the team [Messi]," Perrin said.
He also suggested that because Messi is not based in Argentina, he has no
hometown support to defend him, and as a result is subjected to criticism
from all angles.
He added, "Messi, unlike other players, has no home support. Messi has not
recently left a team like Boca [Juniors] or River [Plate] or Velez. He plays
at Barcelona and has no fans there, which is a handicap to him."

Lionel Cannot Beat Uruguay On His Own - Messi Senior
The forward is under pressure to perform and his dad thinks it's about time
that other players took some responsibility too...
Lionel Messi's father believes that his son cannot be expected to win games
for Argentina by himself, but he is still confident that the team will
qualify for the World Cup Finals.
The Barcelona star has been accused of under-performing for his country, as
the Albiceleste have struggled to impress in the South American qualifying
group.
While many have defended Messi, his father has now added his voice to those
stating that he cannot do everything by himself and should not be a scapegoat
for the team's failings.
"Leo cannot win this game on his own and nor can any other," he told ONA FM
"If nobody pushes forward, then it will be very difficult to win. A team is
eleven players and the whole side has to perform.
"We are slightly annoyed with everything that he been said recently, but we
have remained calm," he added.
"The only thing that Leo is thinking about is what he has always dreamt of
and that is helping Argentina reach the World Cup Finals.
"It is normal here in Argentina. The only thing that everyone wants is to see
the team qualify and from there, the reasons can be looked into and
accusations made."
Argentina take on Uruguay in a blockbusting winner takes all encounter on
Wednesday evening and Messi senior insists he is confident, despite the
difficulties the team will face in Montevideo.
"We are excited by things, but we also know that they are complicated," he
continued.
"Like the rest of Argentina, we do not understand how things have come to
this. We hope and believe that everything will work out fine."
