Will A-Rod follow Barry?
Will A-Rod follow Barry?
Rodriguez would be a good fit at AT&T Park
Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees blew into San Francisco last
weekend and the swing he displayed at AT&T Park was as sweet as a
summer breeze.
He departed the city with nine hits in 13 at-bats during a three-game
series with the San Francisco Giants and drove in four runs. His hits
included a dramatic game-tying home run in the ninth inning of a game
on Saturday afternoon only to see his team lose 6-5 in extra innings.
Rodriguez not only performed the way you might expect the game's
highest-paid player to perform, but he also said all of the right
things when he met with the media prior to the first game of the series.
Rodriguez said he loved San Francisco, loved the stadium (why not,
he's now 15-for-24), and called the city "a West Coast New York with
better weather in the summertime."
Rodriguez even expressed his appreciation for Barry Bonds of the Giants,
calling him "probably the greatest player who has ever put on a uniform."
The San Francisco front office had to love the things that Rodriguez had
to say, but Giants officials remained silent.
The reason is simple -- if the Giants expressed their real feelings
about Rodriguez, they could be charged with tampering.
It was left to a fan of the Giants to express the true feelings at AT&T
Park when a young lady held up a sign (painted in the Giants' colors of
black and orange, of course) during Saturday's game declaring, "We Want
A-Rod."
「We Want A-Rod!!」
The message spoke volumes.
If ever a team needed and wanted Alex Rodriguez, it is the San
Francisco Giants
What makes all of this very interesting, of course, is that Rodriguez
will have the opportunity to opt out of his contract with the Yankees
at the conclusion of the season.
Rodriguez isn't talking about the status of his contract and rightfully
so. He and his agent Scott Boras recognize that the best position on
the status of the contract is silence while Rodriguez goes about blasting
baseballs in amazing and record fashion.
Entering play Tuesday, Rodriguez is the Major League leader in home runs (28),
RBIs (78), runs scored (72) and total bases (193). He's on a pace to hit 62
home runs this year, and at the age of 31, he's on a pace to become baseball's
all-time home run leader.
The Giants' Bonds is closing in on Hank Aaron's record total of 755 career
home runs, but if Rodriguez remains healthy it will turn out that Bonds is
just a pace car for A-Rod. And what could be better for the Giants than to
have Rodriguez be a member of their team when he becomes the ultimate home
run champion?
The image of Barry Bonds is tainted in the on-going discussion of steroids,
an image that is never going to change.
Rodriguez has taken his share of hits as baseball's highest-paid player,
but he never has taken a hit or even had a shot fired his way when the
subject of steroids is discussed.
The Giants owe a great debt to Barry Bonds in that he has been the face of
the franchise and the power in the middle of their lineup since he signed
as a free agent in December of 1992.
More than anyone else, Bonds is the reason why the Giants were able to build
AT&T Park and he has been the key player who has enabled the team to handle
the debt service on the stadium.
All of that being said, the Giants know it is time to turn the page -- and
what better way to turn the page than to replace 42-year-old Bonds with
Rodriguez as the face and future of the franchise.
A-Rod
The Giants made a try at changing the face of the team when they signed
free-agent pitcher Barry Zito this past offseason, but pitchers -- no matter
what they are paid -- simply can't carry the burden of being the key player
on the team poster.
Rodriguez's last contract was for a record-setting $252 million, but you can
make a reasonably safe assumption that his next contract will be a nice round
number -- like $300 million for 10 years.
The Giants may put themselves in a position to do that type of deal if Rodriguez
becomes available. At this point, they have only two players under contract for
the year 2010 -- Zito at $18.5 million and pitcher Matt Cain at $4.25 million.
The Giants have several veteran players they can and probably will move if they
don't work their way back into the race in the National League West.
The team plans to build around some good young pitching but what is missing is
that franchise player that has been such a part of the scene in San Francisco.
It is a city famous for its bridges.
When it comes to baseball, the most famous bridge has yet to be constructed,
and at this point is only in the dreams of the Giants and their fans -- the
bridge that connects Barry Bonds to Alex Rodriguez.
