It is a third-person, singular neuter pronoun (subject case)
in Modern English
In English, words such as it and its genitive form its have been used to
refer to babies and pets, although with the passage of time this usage has
come to be considered too impersonal in the case of babies, with many usage
critics arguing that it demeans a conscious being to the status of a mere
thing.

dog isn't known by the speaker. A person would rarely though, say it when

其實在英文的使用上，有關動物的陰、陽性代名詞選用，
應該要gender-neutral還是gender-specific.. @@ 我都有聽人說過耶！
雖然有些人覺得動物也可以跟人一樣，使用gender-specific的代名詞，
不過保險起見，我個人覺得，在不知道動物的性別前提下，使用gender-neutral的"it"..
好像還是最不會出錯的。
除非speaker本身已經知道動物的性別，
像是bull／cow, cock／hen, ram／ewe, lion／lioness...等，
否則冒然憑藉直覺使用he／she等代名詞去指涉動物，還是有誤用的可能。
