On the heels of yesterday’s post covering racism in the ECFA promotion
campaign, our CPBL consultant and historian Hansioux informed me that back in
the day foreign players in the CPBL and TML used to be named after, among
other things, the products manufactured by team sponsors. He has provided EWC
with a glorious history of foreign players and the origin of their Chinese
names in the CPBL.
一堆來CPBL跟TML的歪國人的中文名字都跟別的事物或公司產品有關聯
Some standout examples: Pitcher Jose Nunez was originally going to be named “
Man-Han (滿漢) ” after a President brand of instant noodles, but the team
thought twice after a poor spring training. Jose Cano–Yankee Robinson’s Dad
–was named “A-Q (阿Q)”, also after a brand of instant noodles. Former
Sinon Bull Timothy Fortugno’s name “Feng Qing” translates to “Amourous
Feelings (風情)”, while probably the best name belonged to pitcher
Chinatrust pitcher Derek Hasselhoff, who was named “Li-Mai-Ke (李麥克)”,
the Chinese name for Michael Knight from Knight Rider. Sinon Pitcher Gustavo
Lopez was named “Feng-Kang” (楓康) after a brand of plastic and aluminum
kitchen products, one of several Sinon players named after household items.

Jose Nunez, Lions, Agans 1993~1995, 1998 P 王漢 Wang-Han
Was going to be named 滿漢 Man-Han, which is an Uni Brand instant noodle. But
Nunez did poorly in spring training while adjusting to humid weather, so the
Lions decided it might damage the image of their instant noodles and changed
one character. It has no real meaning.
原本要叫滿漢，泡麵的名字，只是春訓時投太爛，統一怕傷害商品形象，所以就叫王漢
Cecilio Guante, Lions 1992 P 李豪 Li-Hao
Registered name has no relations to his real name. Besides sounding like a
regular Mandarin name, it has no special meaning.
Benjamin Sampson, Lions 2004 P 金猛 Jin-Meng
Has nothing to do with his real name. It is a Holo homonym for “Very Powerful
”.

Kevin Wickander, Lions 1994 P 長紅 Chang-Hong
Has noting to do his real name. It means “Long Red” which is a phrase to
describe good business or raising stock market.
沒什麼意義，長紅一般指生意上或股票上表現持續良好
Jose Cano, Lions, Dragons 1992~1994, 1998~1999 P 阿Q, 強龍 A-Q, Chiang-Long
Father of Yankees’ Robison Cano. A-Q has nothing to do with Jose’s real
name. It is the name of an Uni Brand instand noodle. When Jose return to
Taiwan to join the Dragons, they changed to a closer phonetic translation of
Cano, “Chiang-Long” which means “Strong Dragon”.

Charles Wanke, Lions 1997 P 俠客 Xia-Ke
Unless sharing 1 syllable “ke” is some kind of phonetic translation, Xia-Ke
has nothing to do with his real name. Xia-Ke means “Vigilante” in Mandarin.
It is also the translation for “Shaq” which is a phonetic translation.

Jesus Hernandez, Lions 1996 P 哈山 Ha-Shan
Unless sharing “H” is a form of phonetic translation, Ha-shan has nothing
to do with “Hernandez”. Ha-Shan is a frequent phonetic translation for the
name “Hussein”. Which is a weird name to give to someone named Jesus.
雖然都是有個H..但哈山的英譯是Hussein(比較像穆斯林的名字)，而投手名字是耶穌...
Marcos Vazquez, Lions 1996~1997 P 馬漢 Ma-Han
Was originally named 馬克斯 “Ma-Ke-Si”, which would have been a phonetic
spelling. But due to poor performance, Lions managemen decided he’d have a
better luck with another name. So they took note from Jose Nunez, and gave
him 漢 “Han” from Nunez’s 王漢 “Wang-Han”.
原本叫馬克斯，但春訓投太爛，統一獅想說滿漢改叫王漢就那麼威，那就叫他馬漢好了

Manny Aybar, Lions 2004 P 捷豹 Jie-Bao
Although Bao might be some kind of phonetic translation for the second
syllable of Aybar, it has nothing to do with his real name. Jie-Bao means “
Fast as a leopard”, and is also a homonym for “News of Victory”.

Mark Grant, Lions 1996 P 許克勤 Xu, Ke-Qin
Actually a Chinese name, named by Grant himself. He was the second player to
give himself a Chinese name. The first was Tiburcio Domingo. This one has
nothing to do with the ball clubs.

Maximo Nunez, Lions 2003 P 陸磊 Lü-Lei
Has nothing to do with his real name. Besides sounding like a Chinese name from
the Martial Art Novels, the name has no real meaning.
武俠小說人物的名字
Michael Garcia, Dragons, Lions 1996~1998, 2004~2005 P 賈西, 凱撒 Jia-Xi, Kai-Sa
While with the Dragons, Jia-Xi was a phonetic translation of Gracia. His name
from after his return to CPBL with the Lions, Kai-Sa, has nothing to do with
his real name. Kai-Sa is a translation for Cesar.
叫賈西好端端的，凱撒跟他本名一點關係都沒有
Cesar Jimenes, Lions 1993 P 福來 Fu-Lai
Has nothing to do with his real name. Fu-Lai means “Luck Comes”.

Qiao-Feng actually counts as a close phonetic translation of Joe Hall’s full

Israel Alcantara, Lions 2005 OF 蓋達 Gai-Da
It is said that Israel didn’t want the translation of Israel, so Lions
management took Gai-Da from “Canta” out of Alcantara. But Gai-Da is the
translation for Al-Qaeda.
他不想要中文名字從Israel音譯(以色列)，所以就從Alcantara音譯成蓋達

Javier Samboy, Whales, Agans 1998, 2003 P 郝威力, 由你卡 Hao-Wei-Li, You-Ni-Ka
When with the Whales, Hao-Wei-Li was the homonym for “Very Powerful”. When
he returned to Taiwan with the “First Bank Agans”, You-Ni-Ka was the name
of the Debit Card issued by First Bank.

Derek Hasselhoff, Whales 2003 P 李麥克 Li-Mai-Ke
His registered name seems unrelated with his real name. However, Li-Mai-Ke is
the translated name for Michael Knight of the TV series Knight Rider*, whom
is played by David Hasselhoff. Poor Derek, that is a stretch for a name.
(Note: Not to be confused with “Night Rider”, a brand of prophylactics
found in bodegas across the states).

Ernesto Barraze, Whales 1998 O 阿沙力 A-Sa-Li
Has nothing to do with his real name, A-Sa-Li is a holo adapted Japanese word
for being direct and straight forward.

Perhaps Luo is the phonetic translation for Rod, but the rest is a stretch.
Luo-Ji is the translation for the movie Rocky.

Juan Alvarez, Whales 1999 P 范野速 Fan-Ye-Su
Has nothing to do with his real name. Sounds like a Chinese name out of some
novel, the last two characters could mean “wild speed”.

Though actually a close enough translation to Serrano, Shen-Luong also means
“Dragon God”.

Brian Warren, Whales, Bulls 1998, 2004 P 畢來力, 勇豐年 Bi-Lai-Li,
Yong-Feng-Nian Bi-Lai-Li is a so so translation for Brian, but when he
returned with the Sinon Bulls, he was given the name Yong-Feng-Nian. The
second part “Feng-Nian” is a Sinon brand liquid sugar.

James Brian McAndrew, Whales 1998 P 馬力足 Ma-Li-Zhu
A failed attempt of phonetic translation for McAndrew. Ma-Li-Zhu means “
Plenty Horse Power”.
Kevin Riggs 1998 2B, 3B, OF 力克強 Li-Ke-Qiang
Though Li-Ke is an ok translation for Riggs, the Qiang part was added to
create the meaning of “Overcome the Strong”.

Brian Traxler, Whales 1998 1B 威力強 Wei-Li-Qiang
Has nothing to do with his real name. Wei-Li-Qiang means “Powerful Strength”

戰玉飛 Bi-Ke, Ku-Bi-Ke, Zhan-Yü-Fei
While with the Tigers and Gidas, Bi-Ke and Ku-Bi-Ke are close enough
translation for Picota. When Picota returned with the Bulls, Zhan-Yü-Fei has
nothing to do with his real name. The name means “Fight Jade Fly”. It could
be a Holo homonym, but that remains unclear.

Gustavo Lopez, Bulls 2004 P 好楓康 Hao-Feng-Kang
Has nothing to do with his real name. Feng-Kang is a Sinon brand for Aluminum
wraps, Plastic wraps, Trash bags, and is also the name of a Sinon super

Has nothing to do with his real name. Holo homonym for “Come here”.

Has nothing to do with his real name. Jin-Sa-Zhang means “Palm of Golden Sand
”, which is a fictional martial arts. But also the name of a Sinon brand

Has nothing to do with his real name. Wei-Yong means “Strong and Brave”

If it was meant to be a phonetic translation of Fortugno, it’s a pretty bad
one. Feng-Qin means “amorous feelings, or flirtatious expressions”.
