Welcome to our special new series that aims to help you improve your English
speaking skills. Over the next four weeks, Jean Dong and William Kremer will
provide lots of tips and strategies to help you on your way towards better
speaking!
We start this week with a look at confidence. What is confidence and how can
you improve it? William and Jean speak to some English learners at Malvern
House school in London. They also hear from Jin Lu, who won the 21st Century
public speaking competition in 2009.
They also listen to an interview with Rob Green, the England goalkeeper. He
made a big mistake in the 2010 World Cup; how can learners of English benefit
from his error? Listen to the programme to find out.
Today's top tips are:
‧ Don't be afraid of making mistakes.
‧ You can prepare your listener for the fact that you might make a mistake.
‧ Think of your studies as preparation for speaking. In class focus on how
you say things; when speaking, think about what you want to say.

Many Chinese learners add or drop sounds when they are reading or speaking
English, and they often can't hear the difference.
They might add an extra sound when they are reading some words, such as
'crisps', for example. What sort of sound would they add? Wang Fei and Alice
will help you find out.
Also, 'I get up at eight' is a very simple sentence but Wang Fei and Alice
read them differently. What kind of difference makes a Chinese learner's
spoken English sound different from a native English speaker's?
In this programme, Alice Castle and Wang Fei interview several experienced
English teachers and tutors to help Chinese learners of English improve their
English pronunciation and intonation.
很多中国学习者能够读好英语中的每个单音， 但是他们的英语口语还是不自然， 甚至口
音很重。 这是为什么呢？ 在今天的节目中， 我们将分析中国人英语口语中的几个普遍
