In drear winds he walked away
From countless deriding eyes,
And sheer silence mark'd the day
Imbued by his soundless sighs.
So the wretch in dreamlike trance,
Adorned himself in tragic hue
To cast a forgiving glance
On those heartless and untrue.
He saw a Jesus reborn
In a false mirror called pride,
With a body torment-worn
Commit a happy suicide.
He's but a whore sickly pale
In shivering candlelight,
Who moans in her wanton veil,
And begs Sade's whip of delight.
