If he really likes you, he will ask you out "DIRECTLY". I would suggest you to understand French culture a little bit before you really want to hang out with him. Also, it depends on how long you want to keep the relationship, or if he really wants to have a relationship. It's really important to know. "Culture shock" is real! What he says is another "polite" way to talk with girls. That kind of conversation is quite common in Western culture. So, please do not take it too serious. "gentle man" is real! Oh! Another thing, other American girls also like him. However, it does not mean the French likes American girl. He may prefer Asian girl than American girl.
