Netherlands
Maarten Stekelenburg 7.5
One of Holland's best players on the night. Made a wonderful first-half save
and blocked with his legs from Fabregas late on when the game looked in the
balance. Has enhanced his reputation this tournament.
Gregory van der Wiel 4.5
Not as prominent as he has been throughout the championship. Barely crossed
the half-way line and provided no attacking threat. Beaten in one-on-one
battles and was booked. Not his best night.
Joris Mathijsen 6.0
Showed a good range of passing, kept David Villa quiet and made himself
available for his team-mates. Decent showing.
John Heitinga 4.0 ☆Flop of the Match
Very much a mixed bag from the Everton man. Blocked magnificently once and
distributed well. However he committed a litany of fouls and eventually,
deservedly, saw red.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst 6.0
Not a bad outing for his last match in competitive football; the World Cup
final. Was given a bit of a run around by Jesus Navas but held the line well.
Mark van Bommel 5.5
Booked early on which kept his aggression in check. Never had a chance to
impose himself on the game, or the referee, thereafter.
Nigel De Jong 5.0
Could, and probably, should have been sent off for a first half 'tackle'
on Xabi Alonso and was employed primarily as a destructive force and ball
winner rather than passer in an ultimately negative Holland blueprint.
Wesley Sneijder 7.0
Provided one of the key-passes of the night when he set Robben in the clear.
Was often alone as the creative force though. An aggression-filled performance.
Arjen Robben 6.5
Will never have a better chance to score a World Cup final goal and will see
that chance every time he blinks for a long time to come. Only an
intermittent threat otherwise.
Dirk Kuyt 5.0
Was forced backwards by Sergio Ramos on occasion and was more than willing to
put in that side of his shift. However, with seven or more team-mates in the
defending half, he had little attacking support.
Robin Van Persie 4.0
An extremely subdued game. Anonymous for long spells.
‧ Substitutions
Edson Braafheid 5.0
Had more to do, defensively, than he thought he might have after Heitinga's
red.
Rafael Van der Vaart 5.0
Did not contribute significantly, despite the armband.
Eljero Elia 5.5
Provided an ultimately frustrating source of width. No end product.
A suggestion that he was fouled in the build-up to the winner.
Spain
Iker Casillas 6.5
Made a game-saving save from Arjen Robben. Was not tested by a light on
attacking numbers Netherlands otherwise.
Sergio Ramos 8.0
The Real Madrid man was a great attacking presence throughout the evening
even if he missed one of the best chances of the night. A wonderful World Cup
2010 which done wonders for his international stature.
Gerard Piqué 5.5
Was given little or no examination by Van Persie. He was, however, roasted by
Sneijder's through pass for Robben.
Puyol 6.0
Was lucky not to see red for a round-the waist challenge on Robben but looked
comfortable when facing the ball at his feet. Which was, luckily, most of the
time.
Capdevila 6.5
Provided Xabi Alonso with a lot of ball and was rarely found wanting in foot
races either.
Xabi Alonso 6.5
Replaced as Vicente Del Bosque sought further creativity. However he showed his
aptitude for the task with clean passing throughout.
Busquets 7.0
This tournament has shown observers that the son of Barcelona's former
goalkeeper is well worthy of his place in this midfield or any other. Another
unfussy performance full of accurate passing and swift pressing.
Xavi 8.0
Completed 80 out of 99 passes on the night and covered nearly 15 kilometres.
An utterly irreplaceable presence in the Spain and Barcelona midfield, who is
the go-to man for as good as every second pass.
Pedro 5.0
Found it difficult to make any inroads into the game. Despite some clever
link-up play, never threatened. Replaced.
Andrés Iniesta Luján 8.5 ☆Top of the Match
My man of the match. Caused consternation whenever he took possession, whether
it was through dribbling or incisive passing. He was fouled constantly
throughout and grew in stature as the game went on. Popped up with a crucial,
memorable, winner.
David Villa 6.0
A very quiet evening from el Guaje, by his standards. He was not afforded much
space by Heitinga or Mathijsen and squandered the one true chance that came his
way.
‧ Substitutions
Jesús Navas González 7.5
Played a huge part in the winner with a jet-heeled sprint from his own half.
Made a crucial difference once he was introduced with natural width.
Cesc Fàbregas 7.0
A wonderful through pass for Iniesta's winner. Should have scored one of his
own but for an attack of the nerves.
Fernando Torres 4.5
Did little and pulled a groin. Story of a season.
