Uruguay
Néstor Muslera Micol 3.0 ☆Flop of the Match
His failure to hold onto Schweinsteiger's long-ranged effort allowed Mueller
to score the opener, and that error completely destroyed his confidence. Time
and time again, Muslera looked uncomfortable when dealing with crosses. Had
he kept to his line, Jansen might have equalised. Then again, coming out and
flapping at the air gave him no chance.
José Martín Cáceres 5.5
Very much uninvolved in Uruguay's build-up, but often kept Mueller and
Boateng from doing much out wide. Guilty of giving the ball away far too many
times, however.
Diego Lugano 6.0
Was a bit unlucky, but probably should have done better with his clearance
attempt late in the game. He served the ball straight to Khedira for the
winner. Occasionally was caught napping, but was overall a more solid
defender than his partner, Godin.
Diego Godín 5.5
Was caught ball-watching as Schweinsteiger shot early on, and paid the price
as Mueller came in to put in the rebound. Later denied Mueller a clear chance
on goal with an acrobatic bicycle kick.
Maximiliano Pereira 6.5
Like Fucile, Maxi Pereira was very much involved in the Uruguayan build-up,
and unlike his colleague, he was much more clean in his passing. While he did
not go forward as much as Cavani, the Benfica man played excellently in
defense.
Diego Pérez 6.0
Appeared overrun in midfield for a fair share of the game, but had the
insight and skill to win the ball and set up Cavani's equaliser. Was visibly
fatigued and had to resort to persistent fouling.
Egidio Arévalo 5.0
Like Perez, Arevalo Rios had a very rough go in the centre of the park. While
Germany only barely won the majority of possession, Rios provided precious
little stability in Uruguay's build-up play: he only completed 29 of 49
attempted passes.
Jorge Fucile 7.0
While his passing was a bit loose, the fullback was rock solid at the back.
Made a trio of timely challenges that likely saved goals, and served as his
team's first outlet.
Diego Forlán Corazo 8.0 ☆Top of the Match
Was clearly nursing a quadriceps injury that kept him from shooting from
distance...and yet, he still managed to earn man of the match honors. Had an
early effort blocked, should have had an assist to Suarez before the break,
then netted with a fantastic volley early in the second half. Had a chance to
equalise at the death, but his free kick rattled the crossbar and the game
ended.
Edinson Cavani 7.0
Played perhaps his best game of the tournament tonight. Made a clever flick
in the 25th minute but was unlucky not to have an astute teammate foresee his
ball. Later, he made an excellent run and coolly finished to equalize the
game at 1-1. Was very industrious, but still played second fiddle to Forlan
and Suarez.
Luis Suárez 6.0
Was clearly rattled by the boos he received, and had a dreadful first half.
Allowed Friedrich to escape and head against the bar early on, and while he
made a fine assist for Cavani's equalizer, the Ajax man botched two clear
chances on either side of the halftime interval. Improved in the second half,
and forced a fine save from Butt before cleverly winning the free kick that
nearly sent the game into extra time.
‧ Substitutions
Walter Gargano 6.0
Replaced Perez for the final 13 minutes, and was much more solid than his
predecessor. Actually was able to spot his teammates with a pass - had he had
more time to play, he might have put on a very good performance.
Sebastián Abreu N/A
Only on the pitch for the closing moments.
Germany
Hans-Jörg Butt 6.0
Had no chance of saving either goal, and was quick off his line to deny
Cavani, Forlan, and Suarez (twice) in the second half. Many will remember
Forlan's shot rattling the crossbar in the closing seconds, but the truth is
that Butt's hand was well positioned to make a save if the ball had been on
target. One caveat: his distribution from the back was at times atrocious.
Dennis Aogo 5.0
Is very lucky to have played the full match. His foul on Perez in the 5th
minute could have been a leg-breaker. His passing in the first half was also
abysmal. The Hamburg man settled down in the second half, but Jansen made him
look good. 5' TERRIBLE foul on Perez, should have been sent off. 33' loose
pass. poor defending on arevalo rios (52)
Per Mertesacker 6.0
Showcased one of the lesser-known sides of his game; he actually distributes
very well from the back. Also made an excellent block of Forlan's effort on
25 minutes. His downfall was a general failure to predict runs coming from
deep; on multiple occasions, he left Butt in a difficult position.
Arne Friedrich 7.5
As usual, the former Hertha Berlin captain was the more roaming defender, and
did his part brilliantly. Made goal-saving challenges to deny Cavani and
Suarez, although his lapse in concentration in the closing seconds nearly
resulted in an equaliser. Oh, and he nearly got his second goal of the
tournament when he headed against the bar in the 10th minute.
Jerome Boateng 6.5
Usually is not known for his crossing, but the newly signed Manchester City
fullback delivered a pair of gorgeous balls, one of which found the head of
Jansen for the second equaliser. Showed surprising composure in transition
when he set up Kiessling with a clear chance late in the game, and was
decisive in defense. With that being said, his passing was very poor. Germany
eventually had to give up attacking on the right side.
Marcell Jansen 7.0
More a natural fullback than a winger, the Hamburg man stayed very wide, and
primarily served the purpose of bringing the ball forward and crossing. His
runs were excellent, though, and he did manage to net with a fine header
before he was withdrawn in the 82nd minute.
Bastian Schweinsteiger 7.0
Started the game very well, but struggled to cope with the increasingly wet
conditions. Schweini's swerving shot set up Mueller's opener, but the former
was lucky that he was only punished for one of his two first-half giveaways.
Was vastly improved after the halftime break: he won and sheltered the ball,
set up the German attack, and played a true box-to-box role with great effect.
Mesut Özil 6.0
Looked very tired for the second consecutive match. Played a pair of sublime
balls to Khedira in the first half, but completely botched a breakaway
shortly before the hour mark. Overall, the Werder Bremen man lacked his usual
precision, probably due to fatigue.
Sami Khedira 7.0
Always knew where to go and what to do, but struggled to execute. Had a
rather poor first half; he completely missed with just Muslera to beat, and
made a sloppy giveaway that should have resulted in a goal for Uruguay. But
of course, he will always be remembered for his game-winning header.
Thomas Müller 7.5
Showed fantastic foresight ahead of the first goal, and was always difficult
for the Uruguayan defense to contain. Used his pace, strength, and skill to
transition into forward positions, and was excellent in defence.
Cacau 6.5
Committed an absolutely senseless hand ball early in the game to earn a
booking, but improved afterward. He's no goal scorer, but the Stuttgart man
is quite good in the open field - his play leading up to Oezil's chance (58')
was superb. With all things considered, however, he never really looked like
scoring.
‧ Substitutions
Serdar Tasci N/A
Came on for the last few moments of the game.
Toni Kroos 5.0
Came on in the 82nd minute, but never really had a chance to get into the
game. Completed just one pass, and spent most of his time defending.
Stefan Kießling 5.0
Did very well to shake his marker and create a chance on goal shortly after
arriving on the pitch, but then missed a sitter with two minutes left.
