Re: Arroyo...
Seething Arroyo: Jazz made me scapegoat
Arroyo
By Phil Miller
The Salt Lake Tribune
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - His final encounter with Jerry Sloan basically
symbolized how their relationship had deteriorated over six frosty weeks,
Carlos Arroyo believes.
The Jazz's point guard, warned by his agent that a trade was in the works,
went to ask the coach if it was true, and found Sloan on his way to find him.
They stepped into a conference room, Arroyo said, and he sat down to talk.
But Sloan, who informed Arroyo of the trade in a blunt 30-second
conversation, merely stood in the doorway, as though, the player felt, he
couldn't wait to get away.
Sloan
"He wouldn't even sit down," Arroyo recalled Saturday. "He didn't want to
talk to me, even then."
There's a reason for that, the 25-year-old point guard, swapped to Detroit
10 days ago for a first-round draft pick, contends: "He just didn't like me."
Arroyo's season hasn't come close to resembling the triumphant tour of the
NBA that he planned last July, when he signed a four-year contract with the
Jazz. He has bounced from injury to losing streak to benching to a trade. The
capper came Saturday when Trevor Ariza's swipe at the ball broke Arroyo's
nose, a fracture that will require surgery on Monday to repair, and a
protective mask on his face for the next few weeks.
But even a broken nose doesn't come close to the pain Arroyo feels when he
considers the ugly, bitter divorce from Sloan and the Jazz.
And the anger that obviously stirred in him when he recalls how the team
portrayed the trade as purely a basketball decision.
"I went from a starter, to not starting, to the fourth point guard. That
doesn't happen all of a sudden because of how I play - it's beyond that,"
Arroyo said, his eyes sharp with anger. "At the end, I think it was personal.
You know, when you stop talking to somebody, when you won't even acknowledge
somebody. When you can't even say, 'I'm not going to play you, I'm going to
play this guy, and here's why.'
"When you don't even tell me that after I've been there [three] years,
[and] you've given me a contract. I feel I was one of the key guys, and you
can't talk to me? That's not basketball, that's personal."
He believes his relationship with Sloan poisoned his relationship with
Kevin O'Connor, too. The Jazz's senior vice president of basketball
operations never contacted him after the trade, and, "It's not how
professionals behave," he said. "You would think that, when you work with an
organization for three years, he would call and say, 'Thanks for what you
did.' " Only O'Connor's secretary and assistant coach Gordon Chiesa called
that day, he said.
Arroyo believes he was made a scapegoat for the Jazz's worst season in
more than two decades, taking blame for all the problems that beset the young
team. He believes the coach had a double standard in dealing with his
shortcomings, as when Sloan suggested that Arroyo didn't work out on his own
enough.
"He said I didn't work out, but I went at night. You can ask my wife,"
Arroyo insisted. "But that's not the point. Why me? Why do I have to go and
shoot? Why not everybody? That's not a team way. He always said, 'Don't point
fingers. Look at yourself first.' Well, does that only go for us?"
And Sloan's suggestion that Arroyo didn't understand what was expected of
him? That part, Arroyo agrees with.
"Sometimes they said they wanted me to shoot more and be more aggressive.
Then sometimes they tell me I'm not passing the ball enough," he said. "It
was very weird."
The Jazz were a close-knit unit a year ago, Arroyo said, and he believed
this year's team would be, too. But the team's spiral into last place - the
Jazz went 9-25 from the day he returned from the injured list to the day he
was traded - has cracked that unity, he said.
"When you start losing, you start pointing fingers, and we had that," he
said. "We had a lot of selfishness, and guys wanting to shoot all the time,
and if they didn't touch the ball, they would get mad and stop playing
defense."
The Jazz were only 5-11 with Arroyo in the starting lineup, and his play
was clearly less confident and energetic than a year earlier.
Arroyo's frustrations bubbled to the surface on Dec. 14, when he gestured
at Sloan from the court. Then they snapped at each other when Arroyo was
taken from the game.
From that point, he said, he had no future with the Jazz. He and Sloan
publicly made up three days later, and, "I thought it was settled. But then
look what happened."
Sloan benched him, gradually reduced his playing time in favor of Raul
Lopez and Keith McLeod, and after briefly restoring him to the rotation,
stopped playing him completely just before the trade.
Lopez
Raja Bell advised Arroyo to approach the coach and ask him how they could
repair their relationship. But Arroyo insists it would have done no good.
Arroyo
"Actions speak louder than words, and his actions showed what he wanted to
do. No matter what I went to talk to him about, he had his mind made up
already," Arroyo said. "He was the coach, and he wasn't going to change his
mind. I didn't talk to him - he told [reporters] I needed to show him that I
should be playing, be more vocal, show my attitude was changing. But it's
hard when you don't give me the opportunity. He said 'McLeod is showing me he
wants it more.' Well, you don't give me opportunities. In practice, I'm the
fourth guy. How am I supposed to show you what you want?"
The Puerto Rican still maintains that he is happy he signed with the Jazz,
and is grateful to the franchise - and to Sloan - for the playing time last
season that won him that $16 million contract. And though he didn't want to
leave Utah and his new home, he's happy the Jazz traded him to Detroit.
"It's so different here. It's a family. We understand we have to win, and
we're all working together to succeed," said Arroyo, who backs up starter
Chauncey Billups. "Since I got here, everybody has been so welcoming.
Everywhere I go, in restaurants, people come over and say, 'Welcome to
Detroit.' I haven't got that feeling for a long time."
It seems to be mutual, so far. Pistons coach Larry Brown was glowing in
his assessment of his new guard, saying, "He gets guys easy baskets. He's
creating good shots." The Pistons allow Arroyo to run a more hectic pace, a
high-risk, high-turnover style.
"They appreciate what I bring to the team here, and that's something that
helps your confidence," he said. "It motivates you to succeed."
Can the Jazz succeed, too?
"I believe in the guys there. I believe in the character of the players.
None of them want to lose. It's very sad to see a good team lose the way we
were," said Arroyo, pausing for a moment. "But it's not always the players'
fault."
