Little:
usually expresses an emotional attitude you have about someone or something
such as whether you like or dislike someone or something.
We rented a cozy little cottage in the mountains.
Shawn's little laugh is getting on my nerves.
Small:
generally describes the size of something:
The jacket is too small for me.
He packed his things into a small bag.

如果照原po的意思，要形容老鼠
那麼Little是用於形容年紀小，
Ex: When I was a little girl.（當我還是小女孩的時候。）
She is my little sister.（她是我妹妹。）
在這句裡很明顯的Little=young.
Small是用於形容物體實際的大小。
Ex: He is a small boy.（他是個個頭很小的男孩。）
或是像我上面的例句寫的，衣服太小了。
所以要看你是要說老鼠是年紀小還是體積小，
不過我的自然反應會說this mouse is little.
我總覺得，形容生物用Small有貶義的意思，而little會顯得他可愛。
（嗯，我果然不是當老師的料。）
