However, if you wish to stresses the fact that girl has COMPLETED
such an action in the past and such action has become part of her
present experience, then you can write the sentence as follows:
"The little girl is dirty from head to toe because she has played in the mud."
Yes, sometimes a present perfect continuous sentence may be
switched to a present perfect sentence with only a slight alteration
in meaning.
