Chris Paul to the Detroit Pistons?
Posted by Dave Dial May 03, 2009 14:12PM
With trade rumors running wild, especially those that involve the Detroit
Pistons, Drew Sharp puts out a doozy in Sunday's Free Press.
May 3, Detroit Free Press: Joe Dumars should go after New Orleans point
guard Chris Paul.
It's not as outrageous as you might think.
New Orleans remains in worse economic shape than Detroit. The Hornets
announced recently that they'll tap into the $175-million line of credit the
NBA established to assist teams through these turbulent fiscal waters.
Overall league revenues are falling and the salary cap might drop to the
neighborhood of $57 million come July 1. The Hornets are currently $20
million over that figure for next season, according to Hoopshype.com, pushing
them beyond the luxury tax threshold unless they pare significant payroll
while receiving minimal in return.
While there is little doubt that the Hornets may look to trim their payroll
this summer, I can't see them trading Chris Paul for salary cap space. If
they do, there is something very wrong with the NBA. Can you imagine the
Lakers trading away Magic Johnson while still in his rookie contract for cap
space? Chicago trading Michael Jordan to New York for expiring contracts? Or
the Pistons sending Isiah Thomas to Nets for a mid first-round draft pick?
Can you imagine the fan reactions?
Realizing that New Orleans is a small market team, and that sometimes those
teams are forced to made tough economic decisions, does not take away the
fact that any move that sent Chris Paul in a trade for cap space would be
detrimental to the health of the franchise.
This(the rumor that Paul was even available) started with a Dallas Maverick
blog suggesting that Mark Cuban offered to take back two big contracts with
Chris Paul.
Picture Chris Paul in a Mavericks uniform.
That might make it easier for MFFLs to watch this weekend's home-and-home
series with New Orleans if Paul dominates Dallas, as he does most times the
Hornets and Mavs meet. But it's also a realistic scenario for next season.
The thought has apparently crossed Mark Cuban's mind. Rumor has it the
Mavs brass let the powers that be in the Big Easy know before the trade
deadline that they'd take the Hornets' two worst contracts off their hands in
a package with Paul. I'd wager the value of Paul's four-year, max contract
extension that kicks in next season that the Mavericks will put on the
full-court press with that proposal this summer.
This was something so absurd that you might expect New Orleans to ignore the
rumor and not even make a comment, but Hornet coach Byron Scott decided to
address the issue.
When Scott was asked about the bizarre rumor, he said it won't happen
unless hell freezes over.
"There's no scenario that's going to make that happen,'' Scott said.
Scott even joked that the rumor sounds "real genius like".
"I mean a small market and you are going to trade away your best
commodity. No offense to (New Orleans) Mayor Ray Nagin, I think Chris could
run for mayor and win in New Orleans - he's that popular.''
The rumor is just as 'genius' now as it was then. Hornet fans would cancel
their season tickets en masse and NBA Commissioner David Stern would be
forced to investigate Hornet management for drug abuse if they traded Chris
Paul for cap space. I think Piston fans can chalk this rumor up as wishful
thinking and a rumor started by a blog in Dallas.
There are plenty of options for Joe the next few months to upgrade his
roster. He should be on the phone to New Orleans, where he can mention Paul.
When he is rebuffed(and he will be), he might want to see who else can be had
on their roster, and see if David West or Tyson Chandler can fit into his
plans to rebuild the Piston roster.
