Nadal to open up in Bremen
Spain go into this weekend’s Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarterfinal against
Germany with the powerful line-up of Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer in their
team and no fears about the indoor hard court.
The tie at the AWD Dome will see two competition heavyweights meet for the
first time since 1997. Germany, who have three Davis Cup by BNP Paribas
titles to their name, have won nine of the 13 meetings to date, but two of
the last three have gone to Spain, the competition winners in 2000 and 2004.
Based purely on performances on the ATP Tour, it’s hard to see Spain as
anything but the overwhelming favourites. Nadal, the world no.2, and world
no. 5 Ferrer, far outrank their singles opponents on the German team. Nadal
will get the tie underway on Friday in the opening singles rubber against the
returning Nicolas Kiefer. The German, was once ranked as high as fourth in
the world but now at number 47, is creeping his way back up the rankings
after a series of injuries.
Spain in cautious mood
The second singles will see Ferrer take on Philipp Kohlschreiber, the German
No. 1, who is currently ranked at No. 25 in the world. The tie continues on
Saturday with the doubles rubber between Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano
Lopez on the Spanish side, against Kohlschreiber and Philipp Petzschner,
before Sunday’s reverse singles round things off.
For all their superiority individually, Spain were in a cautious mood after
Thursday’s draw. “Germany have won nine of the matches we’ve played
against them, and we’ve only won four,” Spain captain Emilio Sanchez said.
“You can never be over-confident against the Germans.”
Spain have had problems on indoor courts in the recent past but this surface
is a hard court rather than the carpet they played on, for example, back in
2001, when the then defending champions suffered a terrible 4-1 defeat away
to the Netherlands. “This court will not be so tricky for us,” said
Sanchez. “Rafael and David have had very good results on this surface, the
same one that is used on the Tour.”
Germany up for the fight
The return of Nadal for his first match in the competition for over a year
will of course give them plenty of reason for confidence, but Germany reached
the semifinals last year, and came mighty close to upsetting Russia and
making the final, meaning they have little reason to feel inferior, despite
those rankings.
Captain Patrik Kuhnen has been forced to name a team without Tommy Haas and
doubles specialist Aleksandr Waske because of injury. “It’s difficult
because we’ll be playing number two and five in the world but we’re looking
forward to getting started,” said Kuhnen. “The court is not a guarantee. It
’s going to be very tough. Spain is a very strong team that could win the
Davis Cup.”
