Chinaglia fights extortion charges

Ex-Lazio legend Giorgio Chinaglia has strenuously denied lying
about a bid to buy the club after police charged him with extortion.
“I have done nothing wrong,” he insisted on Sky TG24.
“I am innocent and still haven't quite understood what's happening here.
“All I know is that Claudio Lotito refused to sell Lazio
to a Hungarian conglomerate or even negotiate with them.
That was eight months ago and we had all moved on, accepting the decision.”
Italian police issued nine arrest warrants on Friday after
“communications, which lacked any basis in fact,
were circulated in the early months of this year
by a few individuals about a foreign group interested in
buying a controlling stake in the club,” explained a statement.
President Lotito (pictured) urged an investigation after
the club's share value increased by over 30 per cent following
the allegations of a take-over bid, now thought to be fake.
“I also read that some fans were arrested, though I don't know why,”
added Chinaglia. “I've done nothing wrong and will prove my innocence.”
The 1974 Scudetto winner with the Biancocelesti has been vocal
in his criticism of Lotito and blamed him for the incident.
“This person is only hurting Lazio. I am really curious to know
why he is doing all of this! The fans don't deserve it.”
