Ailing McGrady
With his back sore from Tuesday's workout and flight from Los Angeles, Rockets
guard Tracy McGrady did not work out on Wednesday as expected, making McGrady
almost certainly out of Friday's game against the Spurs.
"Some days he feels better; some days he doesn't feel quite as good. It's
very similar to last year as far as there is no definitive answers, no clear
-cut date of return. It's the worst place for a player to be, up in the air
. I feel for him."
Rockets athletic trainer Keith Jones said that it is common for McGrady's
condition to fluctuate, even while playing. But while trying to come back
from back spasms, soreness indicates a need to back off.
"He did a lot yesterday so we gave him today off," Jones said. "He's actually
done well. The doctor gave him a different muscle relaxer which has been
good for him, and he knows how to position himself and take care of himself
. But this is how it is even when he's playing, some good days and some he
's sore."
Snap judgment
Rockets forward Juwan Howard said he made a correction with his shot to snap
out of a shooting slump.
He would not, however, said what the adjustment was.
"You start searching," Howard said. "I definitely started searching.
''I go back to looking at game film, look at my mechanics for what I'm doing
wrong. There is a little secret I will keep to myself.
''There were some corrections I saw I had to make," Howard said. ''I made
them. Hopefully, it will continue to get better."
In the six games prior to Wednesday's at Portland, Howard had made 55.6 percent
(25 of 45) of his shots.
In the previous six games, he had made 23.1 percent (6 of 26).
Confidence, however, had never wavered.
"As a veteran in this league, I've been around," Howard said.
"This is my 13th year. I've experienced some shooting slumps, but the only
way to get out of a shooting slump is to keep working on your game and keep
shooting. There may be a stretch where there might be another shooting slump
, but I'm going to continue to shoot."
Foul trouble
With the Rockets allowing more than 100 points in their five games prior
to Wednesday's, Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said the game plan defensively
was not complicated: "Play some."
The Rockets ' daily meeting, however, was not that short.
"They've been better offensive teams, certainly," Van Gundy said. "We've
been fouling a lot more (averaging 25 personal fouls in those five games)
. Starting the year, we really hadn't been fouling. We have to stop fouling
. That would be the No. 1 thing. If we eliminate the poor fouls, that would
help us. Then ability to guard the ball. We've had to double more with Luther
being at the two. That's brought us into some poor rotations."
Waiting it out
The Rockets and Trail Blazers both had some odd scheduling heading into the
game, with the Rockets arriving in Portland on Tuesday after 4 1/2 days
in Los Angeles and the Blazers playing after four off days all at home.
"We had the same thing last year (when the Rockets' game in Portland was
the only game in five days on the road)," coach Jeff Van Gundy said. ''We
went to Vegas, sitting around forever. That's not good.
"I would have much rather played Monday in Portland, flown home and spent
the time there before going to San Antonio.
"The practice (on Tuesday) was fine. We wish we weren't sitting out here
on the road for so long, wasting days."
