He uses a simple, compact stroke that stays in the hitting zone, giving him excellent plate coverage and the ability to drive the ball to all fields. His power output has improved since he signed, with plus raw power that could tick up with natural strength progression. Devers is an aggressive hitter who can get jumpy at times, but he’s at his best when he keeps his weight back and lets his hands work. His pitch recognition is solid for his age, though it’s still an area he’s working to improve. *** Mike (Virginia): Would you label Guerra as purely a defense-first SS? Could you see him developing into a solid hitter or is his whole offensive package still on the rough side? Ben Badler: It won't be an impact bat, but the bat-to-ball skills are solid and he's shown a more patient approach before this season, so the underlying skills are there for him to be a steady hitter. Cosart hit 97 mph before the Red Sox shut him down to limit his workload, although his secondary stuff is understandably still raw. Ben Badler: Their bats are both good enough for the South Atlantic League, but you’re right, it’s not an easy answer. From what I’ve heard though, the Red Sox haven’t ruled out shortstop yet for Chavis, at least in the short term, and there has been some talk internally about seeing how he might look at second base. So there are a few ways to juggle those guys, plus you have the DH, and giving Devers some occasional reps at first base (although I haven’t heard this discussed, to be clear) wouldn’t be a terrible idea either to get him some exposure and keep his bat in the lineup.
