The Red Sox's medical staff initially thought Lowell, jammed on a pitch from Cleveland's Jeremy Sowers, had a strain or bone bruise, and it wasn't until trainer Mike Reinold flew to Miami to see him that the thumb was placed in a splint. "That's when the thinking was that it might be something more than it was originally thought to be," Lowell said in a phone interview with Rob Bradford, who is the author of Lowell's biography. Lowell said that the Red Sox asked him to undergo an MRI on Dec. 7, the first day of baseball's winter meetings, an indication that the team wanted to share his medical information with other clubs as a precursor to a trade. Lowell said that at the time he was hurt, he did not expect he would require surgery, citing a previous thumb injury in 2007 in which doctors assured him that it would heal without an operation. "But I did mention concern, as the weeks went by, [that] I wasn't getting any better," Lowell said. A physical exam by the Texas Rangers showed a torn radial ligament in Lowell's thumb, which will be surgically repaired after Christmas. He expects to be ready for the first week of spring training, almost eight weeks later. The Rangers called off a trade that would have sent Lowell to Texas for catcher Max Ramirez, although the sides could revisit the deal. But for now, Lowell remains property of Boston.
