Catch-22 on 'Tek
With Tim Wakefield likely to miss at least a couple of more weeks, Jason
Varitek will no longer have the predictability in his schedule he's had in
the past. For the second time in three games 'Tek was out of the lineup.
Why? Well, a couple of reasons. First of all, as Josh Beckett noted last
night, 'Tek is banged up beyond belief. But manager Terry Francona also wants
a reasonably rested Varitek's right-handed bat in there the next two days,
when the Sox face lefties.
"So a night like tonight is good because, now, again, we've got two lefties
coming in and if he's rested and not beat up, right-handed, he can help us.
So that's the idea behind it," Francona said.
And why no Adam LaRoche, who went 5-for-13 in his first three starts for
Francona?
"I try to not just look at the small picture while recognizing that the small
picture is important. We have two lefties coming up," Francona said. "I want
Mikey Lowell to have a good chance to be a big factor with those guys
pitching. We'll probably sit David tomorrow, which I've already talked to
David about. There's some mixing and matching. Again, I've been really
pleased with the way Adam has swung the bat. What I don't want to do is get
in the way of him hitting. At the same time, especially in Fenway, Mikey
Lowell is a very dangerous hitter also."
"Adam is going to play probably tomorrow. I need to be aware that - I want to
string together some starts for Mike Lowell because I think that's important
for him. And LaRoche is probably going to end up playing four out of five. I
think we're trying to string it together and then again, pick a day for David
when it will be really good for him not to play. That's what we'll try to do."
In other news, the Red Sox are very upset that Dice-K ripped the team's
training program in a Japanese media outlet. Both Francona and pitching coach
John Farrell ripped what appeared to be a lack of professionalism by Dice-K
in the way he aired some dirty laundry.
Nice ceremony for Jim Rice and well deserved. Pretty nice to see Eck, Fisk,
Stanley, Dewey etc. all take part.
