At Pawtucket, Tazawa will be reunited with Wagner, his former catcher at
Double-A Portland. Wagner said he was immediately struck by the way Tazawa
could use any pitch at any time: his fastball, slider, curve or splitter.
“His command, his pitching, and the way he goes about pitching. He goes
right after hitters. He has four great pitchers that he can throw at any
time, and that’s always a fun partner to work with,” Wagner said.
Tazawa and Wagner spent most of their time in Portland working on getting
Tazawa to use his fastball more, and relying on it instead of his nasty
off-speed stuff.
“They told me fastball is very important as a pitcher. So we learned to use
the fast pitching, the fastball straight, and when to use the breaking balls
and the curveballs, et cetera,” Tazawa said.
“We were trying to pitch more with his fastball, because a lot of his
off-speed stuff is already dominating enough that if he went ball one with
his fastball, it was just curveball, curveball,” Wagner said.
“If he can lock in his command, his fastball, it makes his off-speed stuff
even that much more effective. You throw in the low to mid 90s, might as well
use it,” Wagner said.
