While it’s still unclear how serious the situation is, unidentified Red Sox
sources early this morning told NESN that rookie pitcher Jon Lester has enlarged
lymph nodes, and that among the things he is being tested for is cancer.

The Boston Herald also reported on its web site late last night that, according
to unidentified sources, Lester was diagnosed with enlarged lymph nodes.

The 22-year-old Lester was put on the disabled list Monday with a sore back,
which Theo Epstein said stemmed from an auto accident Lester was involved in on
Storrow Drive at the time of the Yankees series. The Boston Globe reported this
morning that Lester was undergoing more tests on his back in Boston yesterday.

According to multiple media reports, Lester wasn’t seen in the clubhouse during
last weekend’s Sox series in Seattle. An unidentified source told MLB.com that
Lester spent much of that weekend in a Seattle hospital undergoing a CT scan,
among other things.

When asked by MLB.com a few days ago whether Lester had been in the hospital
when the Sox were in Seattle, Epstein did not offer comment. Epstein and Terry
Francona told the Boston Herald that Lester, who resides in Puyallup, Wash. and
is a native of Tacoma, Wash., had been spending time with family.
