The key ideas of the book are:
(1) As far as extending the knowledge of fundamental laws of Nature is
concerned, we have made no real progress during the past 25 years. There
is still something big missing in our framework of fundamental physics.
For example, we have no idea of why neutrinos have mass or what explains
their mass value. Also, we almost know nothing about dark energy.
(2) Superstring Theory may not be the best candidate for TOE (theory of
everything) in the author's opinion. It appears that the current research
of superstring theory attracts too many bright young physicists &
too much funding so that other alternatives to superstring theory
have not yet widely explored & investigated. Plus, Superstring theory appears
to have too many versions. It is extremely hard to prove experimentally
which one is right. Smolin is worried about this trend.
(3) Smolin mentions a few young (out of the big crowd) scientists
who have the guts to have gradually developed alternative testable
theories to explain some bizarre phenomena that our current physics
framework can not explain.
