Telecommu. Networks at the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering at Virginia Tech (VT)
Engineering@VT: Virginia Tech (VT) is one of the best engineering institutions
in the United States. The College of Engineering at VT constantly ranks top in
the nation. In 2017 U.S. News & World Report, VT ranks 21 in the Best
Engineering Graduate Schools.
ECE@VT: The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has
both Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. programs. Both programs rank
top in the U.S.: In 2017 U.S. News & World Report, the Electrical Engineering
graduate program at VT ranks 19 while the Computer Engineering graduate program
at VT ranks 23.
Wireless@VT: Wireless @ Virginia Tech was officially organized as a research
group in June, 2007. Prior to that, it is known as the Mobile and Portable
Radio Research Group (MPRG). Wireless @ Virginia Tech brings 18 core faculty
members with technical expertise in wireless networking, communication systems,
applied signal processing, dynamic spectrum access, cybersecurity, RF
technologies, and system integration. Wireless@VT continues to lead the way in
research and education with its annual Wireless Symposium and Summer School
held the last week of every May.
Location: VT is located in Blacksburg, Virginia. It is a peaceful and quiet
town in southwest Virginia. It is one of the three principal jurisdictions of

Washington D.C.
Professor: Dr. Lingjia Liu is an Associate Professor in the ECE Dept. at VT.
He is seeking self-motivated Ph.D. students and PostDoctors in the field of
wireless networking, machine learning, and signal processing. Prior to
joining the ECE at VT, Dr. Liu was an Associate Professor in EECS at the
University of Kansas (KU). Prior to that, he has spent more than four years
in various industrial research labs (Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs and
Samsung Research America) leading investigation on various 4G standards (3GPP
LTE-Advanced and IEEE 802.16m). Dr. Liu is well connected to most of the
leading telecommunication corporations in the world. His research group is
funded by U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Air Force Research of
Scientific Research (AFOSR), U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), US
Department of Defense (DoD), National Spectrum Consortium, Samsung Research
America (SRA), InterDigital Inc., and LGS Innovations.
Currently, Dr. Liu is serving as an Editor for the IEEE Trans. on Wireless
Commun. (TWireless), an Editor of IEEE Trans. on Commun. (TCom) and as
Associate Editors for the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and
Networking as well as Wiley's International Journal on Communication Systems.
He is chairing various Technical Program Committees of many international
conferences and workshops (including six consecutive IEEE GLOBECOM 5G
Workshops).
For Fall 2018, Dr. Liu’s has multiple openings for graduate research assistants
in the following area:
1. Dynamic spectrum access networks and stochastic geometry analysis
2. Machine learning for telecommunication systems/networks
3. Error control coding, cyber-physical systems, and internet of things
Preferred Qualification:
1) A M.S. in ECE/CS/MATH, and/or
2) Good understanding on wireless systems/networks, and/or
